Here's how to increase mastery with tools in Graveyard Keeper 2.
Mastery decides which recipes you can craft in Graveyard Keeper 2. Equipping a better tool raises it faster than waiting for inspirations. This guide covers how tools raise mastery, which tool to equip, and what else helps.
How Mastery Limits Your Crafting in Graveyard Keeper 2
Each recipe lists a mastery level. You have five masteries: Building, Smithing, Farming, Book Writing, and Anatomy. If your mastery is below the level a recipe needs, you can't craft it, and the game says you don't have enough mastery. Raise the mastery, and the recipe opens.

Check Your Mastery Levels
Open the Character screen and look at Your mastery levels. It shows one number for each mastery, with an icon beside it. The orange pickaxe is Building, the red gear is Smithing, the green wheat is Farming, the blue book is Book Writing, and the purple skull is Anatomy. Each mastery has two tool slots next to its number. The tools you equip and your perks add to these numbers.
Equip a Higher Tier Tool
A higher tier tool in Graveyard Keeper 2 adds more mastery. Each tool's tooltip shows its bonus next to the mastery icon. For example, Bronze Tools show +1 Smithing, and the Bronze Pickaxe shows +2 Building.

If your Smithing is 3, equipping Bronze Tools brings it to 4, which opens recipes that need level 4. A recipe you couldn't craft before becomes available once your total reaches the level it needs. Bronze tools are a good first step.
Craft Bronze Tools and the Bronze Pickaxe at the Wooden Anvil. Open your inventory and select the tool to equip it. A tool does nothing for your mastery while it sits in your inventory. After you equip it, go back to the station and check the recipe.
Match the Tool to the Mastery
Each tool raises one mastery, and each mastery has two tool slots. Axes and pickaxes raise Building. Hammers and small tools, like Bronze Tools, raise Smithing. Shovels and rods raise Farming. Equip the tool that matches the mastery your recipe uses.

Earn Inspirations by Doing the Work
Open the Inspirations tab. It has one tab for each mastery, with a bar under the tabs that fills as you work. Each card names an activity. In the Farming tab, for example, Earth Power II asks you to grow plants, Cook II asks you to cook dishes, and Mushroom Hunter II asks you to collect mushrooms.
Some cards show your progress, such as 8/15 for Mushroom Hunter II. Do those activities in the skill you want to raise. Completing an inspiration adds notches to the bar. When the bar fills, you get one inspiration point. Spend your points in the perk tree on the right.
Its mastery nodes raise that mastery by 1 each, so every point you spend there makes more recipes available. If you only wait for inspirations, mastery grows slowly. Do the work in the skill you want to raise, and use better tools to speed it up.

Other Ways to Raise Mastery
Some perks add mastery only in certain situations. Fissure Finder, for example, gives +2 Building mastery when you work with stone. Some foods give temporary mastery too. Pumpkin soup gives +2 Building, soldier's stew gives +2 Smithing, and a muffin gives +2 Farming. Eat one before you craft a recipe that is just out of reach.
What to Do Next
Check the mastery a recipe needs, then look at your mastery levels. Equip the tool that raises it, and craft the next tier of tools when you can. In Graveyard Keeper 2, do the work on the Inspirations cards for that skill so your bar fills sooner.
To increase mastery in Graveyard Keeper 2, you equip a higher tier tool that matches the mastery you need and do the inspiration work for that skill.
FAQ
Q. Why can't you craft a recipe in Graveyard Keeper 2?
A. Your mastery is too low for it. The recipe card shows the level it needs, so compare that number with the one on your Character screen. If yours is lower, put on a better tool.
Q. How much mastery does a tool give in Graveyard Keeper 2?
A. Every tool has its own number, and you see it by hovering over the tool. Bronze Tools add 1 to Smithing. A Bronze Pickaxe adds 2 to Building.
Q. Which tool raises Smithing?
A. Hammers, and small tool sets like Bronze Tools. Your axe and pickaxe feed Building, while shovels and rods feed Farming.
Q. How do inspirations raise mastery?
A. Do what a card asks, like cooking or growing plants, and the bar under the tabs fills up. A full bar gives you a point. Spend it on a mastery node in the perk tree, and that mastery goes up by 1.
