Here's a quick Honkai: Star Rail guide on how to manage Support characters.
Support Characters are characters that can be used by other players for some combat activities, temporarily. You can also borrow characters from your friends or other players to beef up your own team. This system is very useful if you do not have a solid DPS, healer or character of a specific element in your roster.
Creating a Support Character
Enter your Trailblazer Profile from your Phone menu. Click the Support Character tab and choose the character you want other players to use. Usually, you’ll want to pick one of your strongest and best-built characters. The more developed the character is, the more it can be borrowed, allowing you to earn additional Credits while helping other players.
How to Select the Best Support Character
When choosing a Support Character, look for “good” and “useful” characters across multiple teams. Popular picks tend to be high DPS characters, but strong buffers and sustain can be nice too.
Your character needs to have the correct Relics, good Light Cone, upgraded Traces and a good build. A low level character with a good build can do better than a high level character with bad gear.

How to Borrow Support Characters (Sidekicks)
When you join a qualifying combat activity, go to the team selection screen and select Support. You can then look through the available characters from your friends and other players. Pick a character that fits with your current team. For example, if you don't have a good damage dealer in your team, borrowing a powerful DPS can make farming way easier.
How to Use Support Characters
Support Characters are primarily for farming and other repeatable combat activities. They can be utilized on content such as Calyxes, Stagnant Shadows, Caverns of Corrosion, and Echoes of War.
Some game modes don’t have Support Characters, so don’t rely on Support Characters as a permanent team-building strategy or for content with borrowed character restrictions.

Your Support Character
You can change your Support Character at any time by going back to your Trailblazer Profile. You should consider changing your choice when you get a much stronger character or upgrade the build of one you already have.
Maintaining an active friend list is also helpful. Having good Support Characters in your friends list grants you more options for farming materials and building your own roster.
Concluding Points
Support Characters are a simple, but helpful feature for new and experienced players alike. Set your strongest well-built character as your Support. Keep an useful friend list and borrow strong characters when farming hard content. It is easier to farm resources with proper management of the system, while adding extra Credits to your account.
