Meta Quest 3 Challenges Steam Frame on Price and Features

Quest 3 Combines Standalone VR Gaming and Wireless PC Support While Keeping Hardware Entry Costs Low.

Both stand-alone devices that can run games without a PC and PC-based VR headsets are now available. Meta Quest 3 and Quest 3S can run stand-alone games or PC VR. Steam Frame, by contrast, is designed to work with the SteamVR environment. These headsets compare on price, game libraries, display technology, and the need for extra gear.

When you look at the specs and everything the Quest 3 and Quest 3S offer, the headsets continue to cover a lot of the VR space. For the headset and price, the Quest remains hard to beat. If you have a gaming PC, you can also connect the Quest and play Steam VR games. That gives the headset access to both standalone and PC VR titles.

Quest 3 and Quest 3S Offer Standalone and PC VR Gaming

The Quest 3S can be found for around $250 in some cases, while the Quest 3 has been available for around $500. At that price, the headset offers standalone games and supports PC VR. Steam Frame is different if you don't already have a gaming PC. If you have never owned a gaming PC, have only used a PlayStation or Xbox, and want to get into VR, the Steam Frame lets you enter PC VR without first buying a gaming PC.

Half-Life: Alyx is still an important PC VR game, and there is little dispute that it remains one of the major titles in the VR library. Steam Frame costs around $1,000, and you may also need an additional $60 wall charger. At that price, the available standalone game library becomes an important part of the comparison.

Steam Frame also has no OLED screens. It is a headset focused on SteamVR, but its display technology does not include the OLED panels found on the PSVR 2. One of the Quest 3's main advantages is that PC VR doesn't require a physical cable. Air Link, Virtual Desktop, and Steam Link let you connect the headset to a gaming PC.

That means a Quest 3 can play standalone Quest titles while also connecting to a gaming PC for Steam VR games. The headset can still run Quest 3 games, while the PC connection expands the available VR library. Quest 3 is still a capable headset. Even after several years, it can handle standalone VR games and wireless PC VR.

PSVR 2 Has an OLED Display

Visually, the PSVR 2 has an advantage because of its OLED display. The display technology provides a different visual experience, and the OLED screen is one of the headset's main features. The PSVR 2's visual quality stands out compared with the Quest 3. However, the Quest 3 combines its display, standalone hardware, PC VR support, and price into a single package.

For someone with a gaming PC who has never entered VR before, the Quest provides access to both standalone and PC VR games. Batman, Deadpool, and other Quest titles can be played directly on the headset, while Steam VR titles can be accessed through a gaming PC. Steam Frame could have made a different case for its price if it launched alongside a major game.

What the Steam Frame provides that a Quest headset and a gaming PC can't already deliver.

A title like Half-Life 3 or another new VR release could have given an additional reason to consider the headset. Without that type of launch software, the standalone capability becomes the main part of the argument. Quest 3 already offers wireless play through Air Link, Virtual Desktop, and Steam Link.

At around $500, the Steam Frame would make a different case. Someone without a gaming PC who wanted to start playing VR could buy the headset and access PC VR titles without purchasing a separate gaming PC. A Quest 3 can be purchased for around $250 in some cases, while the remaining budget could go toward a gaming PC.

With a suitable internet connection, that combination provides access to both standalone Quest games and PC VR titles. Quest 3 and Quest 3S therefore still offer a mix of standalone gaming and PC VR. At the same time, the Steam Frame's price makes the overall hardware package an important part of the comparison.
