Here's how to level up characters and farm weapon XP fast in The Forever Winter.
Leveling up matters for two main reasons in The Forever Winter. Weapon attachments stay locked behind weapon XP thresholds, shown clearly at vendors as a requirement when browsing parts, while character skills and prestige require their own separate XP pool to unlock.
Prestiging becomes especially important later on, since it raises the XP cap needed for higher-tier skills and rigs.
Setting Up for a Farming Run
This method works even starting completely fresh, using a level zero character and a level zero weapon with no attachments. Scrapyard Nexus is the map to head to, since it offers a timed extraction point right at the entrance that triggers manageable enemy waves without requiring any real setup beforehand.

A basic loadout of meds, ammo for whichever gun is being leveled, and a bit of shotgun ammo for close encounters covers most of what's needed in The Forever Winter. Free 5.45x39 ammo is a solid budget option if using an AK, since spending it doesn't cost anything and burns through incoming waves just as effectively as premium ammo.
Checking for any active kill quests tied to this map before heading in is worth doing too, since completing them along the way adds extra rewards on top of the XP earned from the run itself.
Running the Extraction Loop
Triggering the timed extraction immediately upon arrival starts a short survival window, typically bringing in two to three waves of Eurasian cyborgs, sometimes mixed with drones. These enemies aren't especially dangerous and go down quickly with basic ammo.
One important thing to keep in mind - firing without a suppressor tends to draw in nearby enemies from outside the immediate area. Staying within the extraction zone itself and avoiding wandering toward the wider combat areas around the corner keeps things manageable, since enemies outside that spawn radius generally won't get pulled in by gunfire alone.

Looting Efficiently
Everything dropped by defeated enemies can be looted without needing to fully identify each item first, which saves a good amount of time during the run. A higher-tier storage container on the rig setup allows carrying more before running out of inventory space, letting a single run pull in significantly more value.
A full run through this loop, extraction included, typically takes around three to five minutes and nets somewhere in the 4,000 to 9,000 XP range depending on how many waves spawn and how thoroughly everything gets looted.
Speeding Things Up Further
Bringing a Scav Mule recruit along adds extra carrying capacity and can even help distract or engage nearby enemies, though it does introduce some risk of losing it if it wanders into a fight it can't handle. Assigning it to stay in place with the default command keeps it safer if that's a concern.
Repeating this loop back to back is entirely viable in The Forever Winter, since the extraction point resets and refreshes enemies each time it's triggered again. Running it just twice in a row is often enough to earn a full prestige level in a fairly short session.

The Money Side Benefit
Beyond XP, this same loop doubles as a solid credit farm. Selling looted items to a neutral vendor afterward builds reputation with them at the same time, meaning repeated runs steadily improve trade relationships alongside straightforward cash gains.
Combined with any completed kill quests along the way, a short session at Scrapyard Nexus can realistically bring in well over 100,000 credits alongside the character and weapon XP earned from clearing it in The Forever Winter.
