Will PS6 Hardware Impact the AAA Game Development?

How lengthy will the PS6-PS5 cross-gen period be?

After Sony introduced the PS5 Pro’s Spectral Super Resolution technology and the PS6 Chip contract Signed by Sony and AMD, a lot of new debates are taking place among the gaming communities. With PlayStation 6 evidently coming within a few years, we’re about to step into a new era of console generations; we can confidently predict that the PS5 generation will be even longer than the current one.

Due to a lengthy cross-generation period during which games will continue to be launched for both the PlayStation 6 and the PlayStation 5, the release of PlayStation 6 titles that fully utilize the PlayStation 6’s hardware will take some time. The hardware left behind will only become apparent when the platform can’t run a game.

For some game developers, this is exactly what they want. This is a plus for those who want to maintain their current setup; nevertheless, it will surely affect those of us who desire top-tier hardware. With solid-state drives now being standard on consoles, we can look forward to the benefits of shorter loading times, which is a silver lining in this extended generation.

Even though the arrival of the PlayStation 6 and games that fully exploit the hardware are still uncertain, AAA developers are already concerned about how the gaming industry will shape up once that happens. The primary reason is the substantial budgets of AAA gaming studios, which can easily exceed $100 million.

PS6, PSN, PlayStation

It’s a matter of financial logic-releasing games exclusively for the PS6 at the start wouldn’t make sense due to the small number of early adopters and the publishers’ need to maximize returns. This understanding of the industry’s economics will keep you informed and patient during this transition period.

The PlayStation 6 is likely to prioritize AI-powered features, similar to the PS5’s PR AI upscaling technology. This shift represents a departure from traditional hardware upgrades, such as boosting the power of the GPU, which are becoming less cost-effective due to their increasing complexity.

The future of gaming consoles is bright, with a focus on AI developments over increasing processing power. This is evidenced by the relatively minor enhancements made to the base model of the PS5 Pro compared to the PS4 Pro. So, rest assured, the future of gaming is promising and full of potential. At the same time, it is important to stay prepared for a prolonged cross-generation period between the PS6 and the PS5.
