Ubisoft brings upgraded PSSR technology to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla on PS5 Pro, delivering sharper visuals, improved image stability, and smoother performance without rebuilding the game's original assets.
Ubisoft has released a visual upgrade for Assassin's Creed Valhalla, adding improved PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) support on the PlayStation 5 Pro. The update lets the game's Quality mode run at 60 frames per second while delivering a sharper, more visually stable 4K image. Originally released in 2020, Assassin's Creed Valhalla remains one of the franchise's most visually ambitious entries, featuring large open environments, detailed forests, villages, mountains, and historical locations.
With the latest update, Ubisoft gives PS5 Pro owners another reason to revisit Eivor's Viking journey without a complete visual overhaul. The upgraded PSSR implementation is part of Ubisoft's free 'The Most Requested Update', which went out on November 5, 2026. In addition to the visual improvements, the update includes New Game+, two new achievements, an Enhanced Progression Mode option, a new Power calculation, and a Master Assassin Naoe outfit.
The upgraded PSSR optimization is PS5 Pro only, though, so PS5 users will not get the same visual upgrade. As Priscilla Nguyen, Engineering Studio Manager at Ubisoft, puts it, the team has been focused on getting the new PSSR into the game's engine and rendering pipeline. The new version is more efficient than the previous temporal upscaler and produces a much sharper, more stable image. The result is better image quality with no performance impact.
One of the biggest wins is running Quality mode at 60fps on the PS5 Pro. In the past, you'd have had to make a significant trade-off between visual fidelity and performance. The new implementation lets you run the game with high visual fidelity, smoother movement, and a sharper reconstructed image. Ubisoft calls the result improved 4K image quality, which should be interpreted as upscaled 4K rather than native 4K.
The visual improvements are very obvious in the game's natural environments. AC Valhalla features huge amounts of forest, grassland, dense vegetation, and all manner of natural terrain throughout England and Norway. The PSSR upgrade really cleans up environmental detail, and image stability during movement also improves.

There's less shimmering in the foliage, and the shadows at the base of trees and in bushes are much clearer, which helps the environments look more consistent as you move around the open world.
Another big part of this update is that Ubisoft didn't need to rebuild all the original visual assets. Instead of replacing the textures, models, and environmental assets the game originally had, they integrated the improved PSSR into the existing rendering pipeline. That meant they could improve the look of a game made many years before the PS5 Pro. As Nguyen puts it, the key challenge during development was balancing image quality, performance, and integration.
The update also shows how new console tech can extend the life of older games. You don't necessarily need to go down the route of remasters or expensive graphical reworks. You can sometimes use the improved rendering and upscaling that the new hardware provides to enhance the experience. Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a good example of how new hardware can improve an older open-world title without changing the original game.
If you've already done Eivor's run, there are a couple of further reasons to go back and play again. New Game+ is now available, so you can start another run once you've completed the Holy Day quest. The updated progression systems also give you more scope to play with your gear and character development. There are two new achievements too, which are, of course, nice for completionists. These are separate from the PS5 Pro visual improvements, but they make the update more than just a visual patch.
Ultimately, Ubisoft's improved PSSR implementation delivers a tangible visual upgrade for AC Valhalla on the PS5 Pro. Running in Quality mode at 60fps with improved clarity and stability makes coming back to the huge open worlds far more enjoyable. The devs also managed this without rebuilding the original assets, making it a strong demonstration of modern upscaling's potential. Of course, the improvements are only available on PS5 Pro, but the update shows you can still improve older games by using existing assets and better rendering tech.
