Battlefield 6 Turns Down the Chaos Dial

EA listens to fans and makes big gameplay tweaks after Beta.

For once, it looks like Battlefield is stealing Call of Duty’s thunder. Earlier this month, EA rolled out the open beta for Battlefield 6, which was easily the largest beta in the franchise’s history. Thousands of players were waiting to get a taste of the action before the servers even went live. The numbers, on the other hand, are only part of the story, as despite the Beta’s successes, it was also met with a fair share of criticism.

You may ask what the issue at hand really is. A straightforward answer would be movement mechanics. Now, if we dive deeper, the picture is a whole lot clearer. Players quickly noticed that some of the movement tricks felt a bit too familiar—things like bunny hopping, slide-shooting, and those mid-air gunfights, all of which looked an awful lot like a page out of Call of Duty’s playbook.

If you’ve played CoD in the last few years, you already know the scene: people bouncing around corners, sliding like they’re on ice skates, and somehow still managing to land near-perfect headshots while flying through the air. This arcade-like gameplay, however, may work for CoD but does not do justice to Battlefield and its diehard fans.

Battlefield has consistently carved out its own niche in the shooter genre. It’s known for tactical, large-scale battles, sure, but the theatrics do not align with the Battlefield template. Fans voiced their concerns loud and clear after the Beta, and much to our surprise, EA actually welcomed the criticism and made some nice, quality-of-life changes.

EA announced some meaningful tweaks to movement. You can’t just spam the move nonstop anymore because momentum has been toned down, making it harder to chain together slides and jumps. Repeated jumps do have repercussions now, as you will be penalized with a lower jump height each time you do it. Say goodbye to laser precision if you are thinking of shooting and jumping, because your accuracy is taking a hit. In short, the flashy, Call of Duty-style maneuvers are no longer the go-to way to win a fight in Battlefield 6.

That’s not the only adjustment, either. EA also reworked parachute physics; the unrealistic boost players got the second they pulled the chute—yeah, that’s gone now. Now, aerial movement is slower and more controlled, which means no more zipping across the skies like a superhero with military gear.

The reasoning behind these changes is pretty straightforward: EA wants Battlefield 6 to stay true to its humble origins. It’s aiming for something more grounded and realistic. We have always known Battlefield as the franchise that rewards strategy and decision-making over flashy headshots or slick movement. It’s a return to the Battlefield identity, and honestly, it feels refreshing in today’s crowded shooter market.

All in all, we think EA’s making the right call. Not every game has to chase the same formula, and Battlefield is at its best when it leans into scale, strategy, and realism. The last thing anybody wants to see on Battlefield, no less, is more bunny-hopping in neon cosmetics and cringe circus tricks. Leave that to Call of Duty and Fortnite.

Battlefield 6 has a chance to stand out by doing the opposite, and with news of Black Ops 7’s disappointing pre-order sales making the rounds, now is the time to pounce on this golden opportunity for EA. For now, EA is actually listening to fans, and that’s already a win for us.
