Call of Duty has confirmed to stop back-to-back releases from developers for the foreseeable future.
Call of Duty has announced that, due to overwhelming negative feedback, they have decided to end back-to-back releases. Since the 2022 remake of Modern Warfare II, they have released consecutive titles from the developers. In 2022-2023, we had Infinity Ward/Sledgehammer Games. In 2024-2025, including this year’s Black Ops 7, Treyarch released Black Ops titles.
However, this new structure received negative feedback from the community. They felt that this new structure allowed Call of Duty to put in less effort than before and still sell their product to customers.
When you look at the games in the last few years, you would think that they could have done a lot more to improve their games. Now, these games look more like cash grabs than games made with passion. Black Ops 7 is a great game, but only because of 1 or 2 modes.
It has the best multiplayer in years, and the Zombies are still good, but the campaign is the biggest letdown. It was a completely out-of-the-ordinary experience that felt disconnected from the franchise. The campaign was mostly negative with the community.
Activision has explained even further on this matter by saying that they understand that the franchise has not met the expectations of the fans, and they have assured us that they will deliver and overdeliver on their product in the future.
Their statement was met with extreme caution from fans because of a promise broken years ago. Back in 2022, Call of Duty said that they would not do back-to-back releases, and they ended up doing so anyway. So, the question is whether they will stick to this promise or backtrack, just like last time.
