It looks like preparations are on for a major PlayStation event, and fans may have just received their first solid clue.
Capcom recently celebrated reaching a significant milestone: 10 million players across all platforms for their 2023 Resident Evil 4 Remake. In honor of the event, Capcom shared a lighthearted video on social media that included a clever reference to the series’ future.
In the video, the villagers infected with Las Plagas move around wearing party hats after Ada Wong rings the iconic church bell. The true surprise is revealed at the very end, when the camera lingers on a series of wooden fences that are obviously meant to represent the Roman numeral “IX”—9.
If you’re still learning Roman numerals, this subtle image virtually indicates that Resident Evil 9 is coming. Naturally, this isn’t a complete surprise. Capcom originally stated that the Resident Evil 7 director was in charge of the development of the next Resident Evil game. Nevertheless, this teaser is in total agreement with persistent rumors that Resident Evil 9 will be formally revealed this year.
But when and where might we expect to see it?

According to a recent rumor from industry insider Jeff Grubb, Sony is preparing for a new PlayStation Showcase or State of Play, which could take place in May, likely before Summer Game Fest begins in June. If it’s true, the timing makes perfect sense. Resident Evil has always been closely tied to PlayStation platforms, and Sony typically launches major titles in late spring or early summer.
This teaser, along with the timing of these rumors, clearly suggests that Resident Evil 9 could make its debut during the upcoming PlayStation event. However, there is always a chance that the reveal could take place later in the summer if Sony decides to push the event.
I’m a lifelong fan of the Resident Evil series, and the idea that a reveal might be near excites me. Resident Evil 9 would undoubtedly be a significant highlight, whether it appears in a special State of Play or a full PlayStation Showcase.
