Both Christy and The Smashing Machine are coming out around the same time, and both are about real-life fighters, so there will be a lot of comparisons.
It’s that time of the year when we start seeing biopics and Oscar-bait films. We have seen plenty of movies depict the lives of famous fighters and boxers, but this might be the first time we have two highly anticipated ones playing at the theater at the same time. Another detail about them is that they are both biopics, not fictional films.
Both films have actors who are looking to get some good drama recognition for their roles in these films. Christy stars Sydney Sweeney as Christy in a movie about a famous female boxer. This is one of Sweeney’s first roles in which she had to gain weight and train. She’s playing a role that is different than what she usually plays and having to go out of a comfort zone of sorts with looking completely different.
The smashing machine is going to star Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt. This might be the first film that The Rock is in where he has a dramatic role. He plays a real-life MMA fighter. Like Sweeney’s role, he has a very different look in the film, looking almost unrecognizable. Both actors seem to be trying to go away from what they usually do in their movies or what we have always seen from them recently.
The Smashing Machine might be the one that makes the most money due to star power beyond The Rock. It’s also made by the same director who directed Uncut Gems, one of the Safdie brothers. People will also want to see what The Rock would do in a more dramatic role.
It already had a 15-minute standing ovation at one of its recent screenings. The Smashing Machine comes out on October 3, and Christy comes out on November 7.
