Report claim new Sony Santa Monica game stars Faye, targets 2027 launch.
After some smaller stories went around, the focus is now on something much bigger: Cory Barlog’s secret project, which seems to have come to light before it was supposed to. Officially, Sony hasn’t said what the game is called yet, but new information suggests that the long-rumored project from Sony Santa Monica Studio may be closer than people thought.
The buzz started with an update on LinkedIn from a top writer who told their network that they would be leaving Sony Interactive Entertainment in September 2025. In the profile update, the writer said, “At Sony Santa Monica Studio, I helped shape the narrative vision and creative direction for a new franchise within the God of War universe, creating characters, storylines, and original lore that expanded the acclaimed IP.”
Just that one sentence was enough to start rumors among fans.
A report said that Barlog was working on a project that would “feel like a new IP” but wasn’t completely separate from an existing world. Fans were arguing at the time about whether Sony Santa Monica should bring back an old show like Kinetica or instead make its main series bigger.
Recent God of War games have been incredibly popular and well-reviewed, so it always seemed like the most natural thing to do to keep adding to that world.

With each major game, the God of War series has gotten bigger and more ambitious, especially during its Norse saga. It’s clear that Sony sees long-term value in growing the brand, since a remake of the trilogy is also said to be in the works. Now, it looks like Barlog’s next project will take us deeper into that world instead of leaving it.
The story says that the game takes place in the world of God of War, but Kratos will not be the main character.
Instead, players will take on the part of Faye, Kratos’s wife and a key but mostly unseen character in God of War (2018) and its follow-up, God of War Ragnarök.
If this is true, it would mean a big change in how the series is seen. Before Kratos got it, Fay used the Leviathan Axe. It turned out that she was a huge and dangerous fighter. In the Norse saga, players learn about her strength, her battles (including ones with Thor), and her deep link to the mythology of the world. Even though she had an impact on events, a lot of her story has not been shown on film.
There is also a big gap in time before the events of 2018’s God of War that could easily be used for a whole new story arc.
A prequel about Faye would give Sony Santa Monica a chance to look into unexplored myths, character relationships, and big battles that shaped the Norse world before Kratos and Atreus set out on their trip.
The rumors about different ways to play may be the most interesting thing. There are rumors that the game will focus more on action, possibly moving away from the slower, over-the-shoulder, character-driven fighting style of the Norse games.
Instead, it might lean toward something faster and more destructive, maybe similar to the energy and camera style of the first three Greek-era movies.

Given how Faye was described—as fierce, unwavering, and incredibly strong—such a change would make sense in terms of the theme.
As for when it will happen, the current plan is for the reveal to happen around the early summer showcase window, which is when big game announcements usually happen. The release date is tentatively set for the first half of 2027, but delays are common in modern AAA development, especially for a company that is known for keeping the quality bar very high.
Fans will continue to keep a close eye on things until the summer event season starts. If these reports are true, God of War could be getting ready for one of the biggest changes to its story yet. It will likely expand the world and bring back a legendary warrior whose story has only just started to come to light.
