The series has been popular since its release during the PlayStation RPG boom. It was known for its unique way of telling stories and how its game systems worked together. For example, save data would travel between releases, which is now common in franchises like Mass Effect.
CyberConnect2 CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama told Famitsu that the title.Hack//Z.E.R.O. is a “restart from zero” for the series in terms of its theme. He made it clear that the game has nothing to do with the light novel.hack//Zero, even though they have the same name.
It is said that the story will take place about ten years from now and will once again be about the made-up MMO called “The World.”
But this installment will focus more on drama in the real world as well as in-game happenings. Due to budget and marketing constraints, earlier entries often showed the real world through simple interfaces like emails or web browsers. Since CyberConnect2 is now in charge of the whole project, those limits no longer apply.
Matsuyama also said that duality is still a big part of the series’ themes. The black-and-white images in the teaser represent contrasts like public identity versus private feeling and the line between real life and digital life. Although it’s called an RPG, the gameplay will have elements of both action and adventure.
