Cyberpunk 2 promises a gritty new city, possible multiplayer, and a fresh story, but fans will have to wait a few years for the next chapter in the Cyberpunk saga.
Mike Pondsmith, the famous creator of the first Cyberpunk tabletop RPG, recently dropped tantalizing hints about Cyberpunk 2077’s upcoming follow-up. Pondsmith recently said in an interview that the new game will take players outside of Night City and into another major city in the Cyberpunk universe. Though he didn’t say which city it was, Pondsmith said it felt “not like Blade Runner’s L.A.—it feels more like Chicago gone wrong”. Chicago, it is.
If the sequel’s setting were based on Chicago, it might have a rougher, darker, and more industrial Midwest feel. It would still be Cyberpunk, but in a different way. Night City will still be in the game, but the sequel will cover more ground. This means that you’ll be able to travel across the country or at least to a few big cities. This bigger world could allow for a wider range of stories and environments, which is something fans have been wanting.
When it comes to gameplay, rumors are going around that multiplayer features might be added. Michael, a co-CEO of CD Projekt Red, has stated that they are seriously considering adding multiplayer features to Cyberpunk 2, which is something the first game lacked.

While there aren’t many details, the idea behind multiplayer is that it might not replace the beloved single-player mode but instead add something new, such as co-op missions or exploring with friends. This is a big change for CDPR, but they’ve promised that fans won’t have to give up the single-player stories they love.
The game is still in development because it is currently in pre-production. Red’s top people have been honest about when they plan to finish their projects. Big projects usually take four to five years from the time they are planned until they are released.
That means Cyberpunk 2 probably won’t come out until 2030 or 2031. This will be disappointing for fans who are eager to play, but it indicates that CDPR is committed to quality over rushing another problematic launch. The same is true for Witcher 4, which started pre-production in 2022 and is set to come out in 2027.
According to insiders, new cyberware ideas are being tested, and Mike Pondsmith has been giving feedback during his recent visits to the studio. Based on what players have said, this means that the sequel will have new ways to play. It appears that a more advanced cyberware system is on the way. This could change how you fight and explore.
It appears that the sequel will feature a new main character and take place in a different city, but it may also reference V’s famous adventures. Since 2077 has more than one ending, it makes sense to start over so that players who chose a different ending don’t get upset. But famous characters like Misty or Judy might still make cameos or be mentioned, and if Johnny Silverhand’s creation makes it through, it will be clear that he is there.
It will be a few more years before Cyberpunk 2 comes out, but the hints we’ve seen so far—about a new main character, a new big city based on Chicago, maybe multiplayer, and better cyberware systems—show that CD Projekt Red wants to make Cyberpunk bigger and better.
There could be teasers as early as next year, but people will need to be patient. For now, Cyberpunk fans who are ready to dive into the dark heart of a cyberpunk Chicago have a bright and rough future ahead of them.
