Days Gone Remastered tech analysis reveals deeper visual and performance enhancements than fans anticipated.
When Days Gone Remastered was first announced, many fans questioned whether the upgrade from the original PS4 version would be meaningful enough to justify the re-release. At first glance, differences seemed minimal—but now that the remaster is out and in players’ hands, deeper technical analysis is revealing just how much has changed under the hood.
In a recent report, Digital Foundry’s detailed breakdown confirmed that this isn’t a simple resolution bump. A whole new lighting engine has been added, which changes the game’s visual tone in a big way. This is the most noticeable update.
The new version is darker, moodier, and has more atmosphere, which makes the post-apocalyptic world feel more real. While artistic preference will vary, many feel the enhanced lighting breathes new life into an already visually striking game that some had previously found a little flat.
Performance-wise, the Days Gone Remastered is locked at a smooth 60 frames per second, with only occasional dips. Bend Studio is also working on future updates, including a 40fps mode with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support—catering to players looking for that perfect balance between performance and visual fidelity.

Players using the new PS5 Pro and running the game in enhanced mode are also noticing improvements thanks to PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which appears to be doing substantial heavy lifting compared to the standard performance mode. But again, it’s the lighting overhaul that stands out as the most game-changing visual upgrade.
Add to that the new Horde Assault mode—an intense, combat-focused addition to the game—and this $10 upgrade is shaping up to be more than worth it for returning players. The remaster has already earned an 8/10 from Push Square, with many calling it the definitive version of a fan-favorite title.
While Days Gone Remastered received many good reviews and new attention, which could help bring Days Gone back into the spotlight, there has been no public word on a sequel yet. For people who want Deacon St. John to ride again, that might be just what the team needs.
