DC’s Superhero Game Revival Begins: Warner Bros Restructures to Compete with Marvel

After years of cancellations and silence, DC is finally assembling a new gaming universe—complete with a fresh leadership team, a new Batman title, and the long-awaited Injustice 3.

Previously, there were rumors and speculations about a new Batman game, and it was said that Rocksteady Studios, the company that made the acclaimed Arkham trilogy, is working on both a full remake of Batman: Arkham Asylum and a whole new Batman game. Here is what we know about what we might be getting later this year.

Marvel and Invincible’s recent superhero game announcements have gotten all the attention. DC, on the other hand, didn’t have much to show in 2025 besides Rocksteady’s failed Suicide Squad live-service and the sudden cancellation of the Wonder Woman game. The Wolf Among Us 2 wasn’t at Summer Game Fest, and Monolith Productions went out of business. The Nemesis system was also left for dead. Fans of DC’s gaming future didn’t see a bright future ahead.

Behind the scenes, however, Warner Bros. is undergoing a significant transformation that could be the turning point. As WB Games undergoes reorganization, its primary goal will now be to elevate DC, Hogwarts Legacy, Game of Thrones, and Mortal Kombat into top-tier gaming franchises.

A new report from Variety states that Warner Bros. has promoted three studio heads to Senior Vice Presidents of Development. He used to work at Bethesda and is now the head of WB Games Montreal. Yves Lachance will be in charge of projects related to Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. The boss at NetherRealm Studios, Shaun Himmerick, will now be in charge of making Mortal Kombat and all future DC games.

All of them will report to J.B. Perrette, who is taking over for David Haddad, the executive who many people blame for canceling major DC projects like Superman, The Flash, and Constantine, as well as for creating live-service chaos on Gotham Knights. When Warner Bros. fired Haddad and hired Perrette, they made it clear that the DC gaming universe was back on the table.

So is James Gunn, who is the new head of DC Studios. He’s talked plans with both Rocksteady and NetherRealm, and a new game set in his reimagined DC Universe is already being worked on. It is expected to be released within the next few years.

But that’s not all. A new report also states that Rocksteady has already begun development on a new Batman game for one person. At the same time, NetherRealm is quietly working on Injustice 3. Studio head Ed Boon confirmed that the original plan was to make Injustice 3 before Mortal Kombat 1, but problems caused by the pandemic forced them to reconsider. The third game in the popular superhero fighting series is back on track now that MK1 support is over.

The way DC handles licenses is also getting stricter. David Corenswet, who plays Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming movie, just jumped into Fortnite, which is a sign of more promotional crossovers to come.

For characters like Superman, The Flash, Green Lantern, and Zatanna to reach their full potential and for DC Universe Online to have a sequel, Warner Bros. finally seems ready to make a DC video game universe that can compete with Marvel’s growing popularity. It’s been a long time since there was a Superman game, and now is the perfect time because his movie is set to be the biggest movie of 2025.
