A classic PS1 RPG might be returning with modern visuals—and insiders say it’s real.
Square Enix is gearing up for the Nintendo Switch 2 release with their cult classics, like Dragon Quest, which is what fans think. Square Enix thinks this will be a huge hit all over the world. New remasters like Final Fantasy 7 Remake Integrade and Bravely Default HD Remaster show how sure they are of this. Some new games like Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake are already out on all the major systems, like the PC, PlayStation 5, Switch, and Xbox One. Where is Dragon Quest 7 Remake now?
Is Dragon Quest VII being made over in modern times? After a series of rumors, that’s the question that’s been going around RPG forums. It was a rumor that Square Enix was working on a remake of Dragon Quest VII, the cult classic PS1 RPG, and rumors began to spread. Many people quickly dismissed it as just another hopeful rumor, but a trusted leaker, who is known for being very accurate in his industry reporting, made things worse.
A user recently wrote passionately on a ResetEra thread about Dragon Quest VII, how it was the game in the series that finally “clicked” for them. An insider replied in a vague but important way, “I didn’t say there’s no remake!” Fans saw this as a quiet confirmation that something is indeed being worked on because of how carefully he has always said things.
In the past, the leaker has been honest when he didn’t know anything about a project. But this time, his jokey answer makes it very clear that a remake might be happening. If it’s true, Square Enix seems to be planning to release it in 2026. This will give them time to update the game’s old graphics and gameplay.

Dragon Quest VII first came out on the PlayStation 1. It was then remade for the 3DS, which was more accessible but still a niche game. Fans still remember the game fondly for its deep story and slow start, but also for its strong class and job system, long questlines, and emotional character arcs.
A remake may fit right in with Square Enix’s new plan, which is to focus less on quantity and more on bringing their biggest and best-known franchises back to life. The company no longer seems to be putting out a lot of small games; instead, they are focusing on making good remakes and big sequels.
Dragon Quest VII never got as much attention as Dragon Quest VIII or XI. A proper remake could finally give it the attention it deserves, especially since Dragon Quest has a lot more fans around the world now than it did in the early 2000s. The 3DS version didn’t do as well in the West as Square Enix may have hoped, but a lot has changed in the gaming world since then.
With the Nintendo Switch 2’s success, now might be a great time to bring the game back to modern systems like the Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. If Dragon Quest VII could get a good remake with enough money, it would get the visual makeover it needs and keep the story and class mechanics that fans loved.
It would be good for everyone, not just Western fans. Dragon Quest VII was a huge hit when it came out in Japan, and it’s still one of the most popular games in the series there. A global remake release could make it more popular in all markets, bringing together old fans and people who have never seen it before.

Now the important question is: what would this remake look like? Would Dragon Quest III HD-2D offer a stylized, sprite-based visual makeover? Or would it try to be more like Dragon Quest XI, with full 3D environments and a movie-like presentation?
We still don’t know how much money will be invested, but Square Enix’s changing strategy and the insider’s approval are making things look good. If this remake is really being made, it might be fully shown off in 2025, maybe as part of a big Square Enix or Nintendo event.
Fans are listening to every word and hush until then, and insiders’ words are doing a lot of the work. What do you think? Would you play Dragon Quest VII again if it had new graphics and controls? Or would this be your first time playing one of the franchise’s least well-known games?
