Bruce Nesmith explains why Tamriel’s fantasy world may struggle to stand out in today’s crowded streaming landscape.
There has been a lot of talk about whether Bethesda’s other famous brand, The Elder Scrolls, could get the same treatment after the huge success of the Fallout TV series. As movies and online services show more and more video game adaptations, fans are naturally curious about what big property might be next.
Bruce Nesmith, who was the lead creator of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, says that the change from game to screen might not be as easy for Tamriel as it was for the wasteland after the end of the world. Nesmith recently mentioned his ideas in a report. He worked at Bethesda until 2021 and helped make big games like Oblivion and Fallout 3.
Nesmith thinks that the main difference is that each brand has a different setting. The retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic world of Fallout sets it apart, but modern entertainment offers more games with standard fantasy settings. His view is that creativity is a very important factor in determining whether an adaptation can attract popular attention.
The designer pointed out that people are already used to seeing big fantasy shows.
The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones are the most popular shows in this genre, which makes it harder for other medieval fantasy worlds to stand out. Many of the main ideas in The Elder Scrolls have already been shown in movies and TV shows, from dragons to kingdoms and magical settings.

Nesmith summed up the problem simply: viewers have seen so many movies and TV shows featuring fantasy creatures like dragons that they no longer feel new. Nesmith doesn’t think that a full TV show based on The Elder Scrolls would be as popular as Fallout.
He says that the franchise’s best features—player freedom, exploration, and world-building—are better enjoyed when the game is played with others rather than in a series.
If the universe were to show up on TV at all, Nesmith thinks a movie project might make more sense than a long-running show. He mentioned that this kind of production could mostly be used as a marketing tool, possibly helping to get people excited about The Elder Scrolls VI.
It’s interesting that he also stressed that making money from adaptations isn’t always the main goal of these projects.
He thinks that Bethesda probably doesn’t make much money directly from the Fallout TV show. Instead, the company probably makes more money from people becoming interested in the games and the brand as a whole again.
As video game adaptations become more popular, people are still arguing over which worlds work best on the big screen. The wasteland of Fallout worked well for streaming, but it’s not so clear that The Elder Scrolls will ever be made into a movie.
For now, the question is still open: should Bethesda try to bring Tamriel to life in a movie or TV show, or is the game better left to players who explore its worlds?
