Studio Khara unveils a fresh direction for the iconic franchise as production officially begins on Evangelion's 30th anniversary.
A brand new Evangelion anime has finally been revealed. It will be the franchise's first TV outing since the conclusion of the Rebuild of Evangelion film series in 2021. The announcement was made at the Evangelion 30th Anniversary event in Japan, where Studio Khara released the first teaser video and announced that production on the new project had commenced.
The teaser is short, but it gives viewers a first look at the upcoming series, which features the redesigned Eva Unit-01. Longtime supporters were overjoyed at the announcement. They are excited to know what will happen next to the famed mecha franchise after the Rebuild story arc has concluded.
The trailer includes Unit-01, but also a ton of weird imagery, such as a room breaking apart, with shattered chairs and broken string instruments.
The images have generated a lot of discussion because they closely resemble several notable scenes from both Evangelion: Death (True) and the Rebuild movies. Some of these examples are the iconic scenes where Shinji, Rei, Asuka, and Kaworu play string instruments, as well as the parts in the third Rebuild movie where Shinji and Kaworu play the piano together.
The teaser appears to blend imagery from both timeframes, possibly suggesting that the new program would be affected by more than one era of the brand. One of the key areas of discussion around the news is the project’s artistic staff. The series will be written by NieR: Automata creator Yoko Taro. Taro has said that Evangelion had a huge impact on his own work, so his involvement with the brand feels like a full-circle moment for both the creator and the franchise.
It will be directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, who has worked with and learned from Hideaki Anno for a long period. Most recently, Tsurumaki and Anno worked together on Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX. Fans of the Rebuild films of Evangelion have associated this series with it, as it takes a great franchise in a fresh direction.

Fans are really hopeful about the project with Taro and Tsurumaki collaborating.
Many see it as an opportunity to pass the torch to a new generation of artists inspired by Anno’s work. The new series may offer a bold vision, grounded in what they’ve seen and done, while also honoring the original's memories. The project will be a collaboration between Studio Khara (the studio behind the Rebuild movies, founded by Hideaki Anno) and CloverWorks (the studio behind recent hits like Spy x Family and Bocchi the Rock!).
One of the most famous anime studios is partnering with one of its most famous new production businesses. Another person on the project is Toru Yatabe, who has worked on the Rebuild movies, Chainsaw Man, and GQuuuuuuX. The series will feature music by Keiichi Okabe, famed for his work on the NieR trilogy. If the music in the teaser is anything to go by, then fans can definitely expect another somber and melancholy soundtrack.
It feels like this new section is intended to be more than just a continuation of the current plot, given the famous creative team working on it. Over the years, Hideaki Anno has repeatedly claimed that he wants Evangelion to expand into something like the Gundam franchise, with numerous timelines, worlds, and fresh creative teams putting their own take on the story.
That appears to be the case with the newly revealed anime, which is taking a brand-new creative approach rather than continuing the tale. No word has been offered on the story, release date, or how the movie will be released at this point. The official statement notes that filming has begun, suggesting viewers may have to wait until 2027 or later for the new show.
