Everything you need to know about the new RPG's Japan launch, the wait for a Western drop, and why Falcom might be taking its time this go-around.
A new RPG is landing soon, and it's got people paying attention. Kyoto Xanadu, the latest project from Nihon Falcom, is shaping up to be one of the more interesting releases on the calendar this year, and it's arriving faster than you might expect.
Kyoto Xanadu is set to launch in Japan and across Asia this month, specifically on July 16, which is in less than 2 weeks, and it's coming to a wide range of platforms. You'll be able to grab Kyoto Xanadu on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, the original Nintendo Switch, and PC through Steam.
That's a solid lineup of hardware for a single release, and it shows Falcom isn't cutting corners on availability, at least for the Japanese market. Ahead of launch, Falcom dropped a two-minute trailer along with a fresh TV commercial, both loaded with new gameplay footage.
The clips also showcase the theme song, "From 'i'", performed by the game's virtual singer, LinoN. If you want to hear it, the track is already up for download or streaming on several major platforms, including Mora Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, and Apple Music.
Now here's where things get a little murkier. A Western release for Kyoto Xanadu is confirmed to be in the works, but there's no date attached to it yet. It's possible the announcement is simply being held back while the localization team finishes up.

Falcom has a decent track record of bringing games overseas.
Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter is a good example, but a smaller-scale title like this one likely needs extra time to get everything right. There's also a good chance Falcom is being extra cautious because of what happened with Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana.
That localization turned out so rough for Western audiences that the company had to issue a public apology over it. Chances are, nobody at Falcom wants a repeat of that mess, so pouring more time into getting Kyoto Xanadu's translation and text right makes a lot of sense.
Timing is another piece of the puzzle. This year is packed with major releases, and Falcom itself already has Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter on the schedule. With that kind of internal competition alone, finding the right release window for Kyoto Xanadu outside of Japan is going to take some careful planning. A reasonable guess is that August could end up being the sweet spot.
Fewer big titles tend to launch that month, which would give Kyoto Xanadu some breathing room. So the likely scenario is a Japan and Asia launch on July 16, followed by a Western release sometime in August, though that's speculation for now. Either way, the gameplay footage shown off so far looks promising, and Kyoto Xanadu is shaping up to be a title worth keeping an eye on as more release details come out.
