The final chapter of the remake trilogy promises a huge open world, airship exploration, faster combat, and a multiplatform launch.
After years of waiting, the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy is finally heading toward its biggest moment yet. Final Fantasy VII Revelation is being positioned as the final chapter, and everything shown so far suggests Square Enix is aiming for a much larger and more ambitious adventure than the games that came before it.
According to the sources, Revelation will launch across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. That alone makes the project pretty interesting, especially considering how much the technology has changed since the first remake was revealed more than a decade ago.
The biggest attraction this time around is the world itself. Revelation will have a seamless open-world setting, giving players far more flexibility to walk around and explore. The airship is also seen to play a crucial role. Players will reportedly be able to take off, travel across the world, and even jump from the ship to reach different locations.
That sounds like a wild upgrade from the more structured areas found in the earlier games.
The question is, how far will Square Enix take that freedom without turning the story into a collection of random distractions?
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth already showed that the developers were willing to make the remake series much bigger than the original game. Revelation appears ready to push that idea even further.

The world looks larger, the environments are more detailed, and the sheer amount of freedom could make exploration one of the game's biggest selling points. Combat is getting another boost as well. The fast-paced system introduced in Final Fantasy VII Remake and expanded in Rebirth is returning. Still, it does not look like the developers are simply pressing the copy-and-paste button.
According to the sources, the combat has continued to evolve, with smoother animations, more impressive character movement, and plenty of flashy action. That progression makes sense. Each game in the trilogy has benefited from newer hardware, and Revelation benefits from being built specifically for current-generation systems. The game is also coming to multiple platforms, giving Square Enix another opportunity to show what the series can do on PS5, Xbox Series consoles, PC, and Switch 2.
The Switch 2 version could be particularly interesting. Rebirth already surprised players with how well such a large game could run on Nintendo's newer hardware. Revelation looks even bigger, so seeing how the developers manage to squeeze all of that into the Switch 2 could be quite something.
Of course, the biggest challenge isn't graphics or technology. It is the ending. The remake project started back in 2015, and what began as a remake of one classic game eventually became a massive three-part saga. That decision let Square Enix expand the characters, locations, and story in ways the original never could. At the same time, it also made the journey much longer.
Now Revelation has to bring everything together.
That means wrapping up the trilogy, giving the characters a proper conclusion, and making the long wait feel worthwhile. There is also plenty of curiosity about what Square Enix will do with Final Fantasy after this project is finally finished, with the next numbered entry expected to enter the spotlight eventually.
For now, though, Revelation has one job: stick the landing. If the open world, airship exploration, combat, visuals, and story all come together as planned, Final Fantasy VII Revelation could be a fitting finale to one of gaming's most ambitious remake projects. After more than a decade of waiting, the real question is simple: can the final chapter make the journey worth every minute?
