Nintendo's upcoming strategy RPG starts with four heroes but saves its biggest surprise for the end, introducing a time-travel story that could reshape the entire adventure.
At first glance, Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave looks exactly like what fans would expect from the long-running strategy RPG series. There are knights, mages, archers, tactical battles, and a cast of heroes with personal goals driving them forward. But according to the sources, Nintendo's latest Direct had one surprise that completely changed how the game is being viewed.
The story begins by introducing four playable heroes, each with their own reason for entering the Heroic Games. Kai wants to rescue his father from prison. Dietrich, a mysterious warrior who washes ashore, joins simply to prove his strength. Theodora hopes to restore the honor of her goddess, only to discover that the person responsible for her father's murder is competing in the same tournament.
Lea completes the group, with each character offering a separate storyline that players can switch between whenever they choose.
Instead of locking players into one campaign, Fortunes Weave lets them experience all four stories side by side. That means players can jump between characters and slowly piece together the larger picture as the adventure unfolds.
On the battlefield, the game sticks to the tactical gameplay Fire Emblem fans know well. Swords, spears, axes, bows, gauntlets, and magic all return, while one unexpected weapon immediately caught players' attention. It looked like a handgun, sparking plenty of discussion online, although according to the sources, Nintendo describes it as a special type of gauntlet rather than an actual firearm.

Positioning remains just as important as ever.
Different types of terrain provide combat advantages, rewarding smart planning instead of reckless attacks. There's something new called Blaze Arts that adds a new element of strategy, where characters can sacrifice their own health to perform stronger attacks. It's a powerful mechanic, but using it too often can knock a unit out of battle. Fortunately, players can rewind turns if a strategy goes wrong and try a different approach.
Outside of combat, there is plenty to manage. Characters can train, shop, explore towns, and prepare for future battles before heading across an overworld map. Time moves forward as players travel, and certification exams allow units to unlock stronger classes. There are beginner and advanced classes, each with their own weapons, movement, and skills, so gamers have lots of choice in building their perfect team. Then comes the moment nobody saw coming.
Just as the Direct seemed to have explained the game's structure, the presentation suddenly jumped five years into the future. A ruined world appears, and an entirely new protagonist steps into the spotlight. This character faces a powerful Demon God in a battle that seems impossible to win. Instead of accepting defeat, they gain the ability to travel back in time and change the fates of Kai, Dietrich, Theodora, and Lea.
That reveal turns what looked like four separate character stories into something much bigger. Rather than choosing a single path, players appear to be guiding all four heroes toward a shared future while uncovering the mystery behind the world's downfall. Could this hidden protagonist be the thread connecting every storyline?
Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave launches on September 17.
The digital edition will cost $70, while the physical version is priced at $80 and includes the full game on the cartridge rather than using a game-key card. A Collector's Edition will also be available for $120, and players choosing the digital version should expect a 29.5 GB download. According to the sources, Nintendo will also release a developer article on September 15 with more details about the game.
Everything shown so far suggests Fire Emblem Fortunes Weave is aiming to be more than another entry in the series. The time-travel mysteries and interwoven plots may make this one of the series' most grandiose adventures yet, but it's still fundamentally tactical combat. What further surprises Nintendo still has up its sleeve is the real question now.
