Gamers Are Offering Over $30,000 to Anyone Who Can Crack the PS5

A community-funded bounty is gaining momentum as modders search for a way to jailbreak the latest PS5 firmware and unlock new possibilities.

Money talks, and right now it's making waves in the PlayStation community. Instead of waiting for the next big PS5 exploit to appear, fans have decided to take matters into their own hands. A growing crowdfunding campaign has collected more than $30,000 to reward anyone who can successfully jailbreak Sony's latest console and get it running an alternative operating system.

The bounty has quickly caught the attention of modding enthusiasts. Hundreds of supporters have already chipped in, pushing the reward past the $31,000 mark. The goal isn't piracy or cheats—at least not officially. The campaign is focused on opening the PS5 enough to run custom software, with Linux being one of the biggest reasons people want a modern jailbreak.

The project works differently from the bug bounty programs usually offered by tech companies. In those programs, security researchers report vulnerabilities directly to the manufacturer, receive a reward, and the company patches the issue before anyone else can use it.

This community-funded bounty takes the opposite approach. Instead of reporting the exploit to Sony first, the reward is meant to encourage researchers to share a working jailbreak with the community before the company can close the loophole through a firmware update.

So what would it take to win the prize?

A successful exploit would need to break out of the PlayStation 5’s hypervisor, which is the security layer that protects the console’s core system, and allow for booting an alternative operating system. It doesn’t need to be polished or useful in everyday contexts, but it needs to prove that the terminal can load something like Linux.

There's another important requirement. The exploit must work on firmware version 3.42 or newer, including the latest available software. If the process requires repeating, it also needs to be completed in ten minutes or less, making it practical enough for others to recreate.

That last part is what makes this challenge so interesting. PS5 jailbreaks already exist, but they only work on much older firmware versions. Most console owners regularly install system updates, meaning those older methods are out of reach for the vast majority of players.

A working exploit for current firmware would be a completely different story. It could breathe new life into the PS5 modding scene and give developers a fresh platform for experimenting with homebrew software, Linux, and other community-driven projects. Could a cash prize be the motivation that finally leads to a major breakthrough?
