Despite a sales landscape dominated by sports franchises and annual shooters, Ghost of Yōtei emerges as one of PlayStation 5’s biggest success stories of 2025 — and a rare outlier worth celebrating.

The game Ghost of Yōtei is once again the topic of talk. This time, it’s because new sales data makes it easier to see how well the game did in 2025. Circana recently released new sales figures showing that the game ranked third among PlayStation 5 games of the year. This is a big accomplishment in an industry full of giants.

Ghost of Yōtei comes in third place, behind Battlefield 6 and NBA 2K26, with Battlefield 6 taking the lead on all platforms. Cross-platform comparisons might be hard, but Circana’s chart is all about PlayStation 5 sales. It shows how well Ghost of Yōtei is doing in Sony’s ecosystem.

Along with the previously released PlayStation download charts from late 2025, this new information lets us compare not only sales but also player behavior across different areas. Even though Ghost of Yōtei’s success is impressive on its own, looking at the bigger lists shows a more troubling (and maybe even depressing) trend in the modern game market.

A finish in the top three in a very full field.

The top of the PS5 sales chart is dominated by well-known brands. Battlefield 6 comes in first, NBA 2K26 comes in second, and Ghost of Yōtei comes in third. The other ten games on the list are Call of Duty, Madden, EA Sports College Football, MLB The Show, EA Sports FC 26, and Forza Horizon 5.

Ghost of Yōtei’s existence is interesting, but so is the fact that it is one of the 10 best-selling PS5 games of 2025, which is mostly sports franchises or first-person shooters. For example, Call of Duty shows up in both sales and download rankings many times.

This is a serious situation. Ghost of Yōtei isn’t competing with niche releases or games with small audiences; it’s beating out huge, multi-year brands with loyal fan bases. That alone makes its third-place finish interesting, even if it never sells as many copies as its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima.

The regional download numbers for PlayStation add to this effect. Ghost of Yōtei was the ninth most-played PS5 game in the US and Canada in 2025. NBA 2K, Battlefield, Grand Theft Auto V, College Football, Madden, Minecraft, and several Call of Duty games were on top of it.

Europe’s chart is a little different, with a wider range of music. Along with well-known games like EA Sports FC, Battlefield, and GTA V, there are games like Clair Obscur, Split Fiction, Hogwarts Legacy, and It Takes Two. It’s not as popular in Europe as it is in North America, but that doesn’t really affect how well Ghost of Yōtei does in the market as a whole because of differences in the sizes of the player bases.

When you look at both areas, you can see that most of the top titles are long-running series or all-time classics, even if they are years old.

The fake variety in download charts.

The 20 most downloaded PS5 titles may look like a big range on paper. In real life, the motifs keep recurring. There are a few exceptions to the sports games and shooters that make up majority of the market.

Even when exceptions like GTA V, which seems to come out every year, are taken into account, the math is still very clear. Fourteen of the twenty most-played games are either shooters or sports games. Not many open-world action-adventure games, story RPGs, or experimental games have come out recently.

It pretty much stands alone at the top of these lists. Aside from Forza Horizon 5, which is a consistently popular racing game, Ghost of Yōtei is one of the few games in the top rankings that doesn’t depend on yearly updates or competitive multiplayer loops.

When you look at how good the games released in 2025 are, the difference is even more noticeable. This year had a lot of great games, including Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, Doom: The Dark Ages, Expedition 33, and many AAA and independent titles. But none of these even come close to making it to the top of PlayStation’s download or sales charts.

This isn’t a problem withthose games. It shows how critics and regular people respond to things differently. A lot of players stick with the same clubs year after year because they like the comfort of the familiar better than the danger of attempting something new.

Even if it’s annoying, the research supports it. People often ask why game companies make live-service models, yearly releases, and paid multiplayer environments.. These charts show the answer.

Why the Ghost of Yōtei is important.

In this light, Ghost of Yōtei’s success seems almost magical. It not only made the charts but also ranked among the top 3 best-selling PS5 games of the year. Ghost of Yōtei shows that high-quality single-player games can still stand out on a list dominated by Call of Duty and sports games.

Even if it never sells as many copies as Ghost of Tsushima, the effort should still be praised. It reached the same people who mostly buy shooters and sports games, and millions of players decided to do something different.

That’s enough to make it important.

Ghost of Yōtei’s rise isn’t simply a win for the developer; it’s a rare sign that innovation, ambitious world-building, and a focus on single-player can still shake things up in a market already full of them.

These stats don’t just reflect how Ghost of Yōtei is doing; they represent how the whole industry is doing. Seven of the ten best-selling titles on PlayStation in 2025 are from only a few genres. There is little doubt that players’ choices shape the terrain.

That’s why Ghost of Yōtei’s location is important. In a market where things are repeated, it stands out, showing that different games may do well, even if only one at a time. make it through a year full of great games that most players didn’t even notice. It got through. And in the world of games today, that might be its biggest accomplishment.
