Sucker Punch doubles down on single-player mastery while giving PlayStation fans the multiplayer experience they’ve been asking for.
The shockwaves from Opening Night Live are still being felt after Gamescom is over. One of the most important announcements wasn’t a brand-new IP or a surprise sequel; it was an update, which fans knew was coming but still can’t stop talking about. Ghost of Yōtei Legends, a cooperative multiplayer update, will be released as free DLC in 2026 for everyone. Sucker Punch Productions confirmed this.
Many of the fans recognize a pattern. Back in 2020, Sucker Punch hit it big with Ghost of Tsushima: Legends, a surprise co-op game that added to the samurai epic that got great reviews. People loved it. It had monsters from another world, strange environments, and let them fight waves of Oni with friends. Because it worked so well, Sucker Punch had to use the same method again for Ghost of Yōtei.
Legends mode is going to be even bigger this time. You can play as one of four different classes and take part in story tasks with two other people. You will no longer only be fighting bandits and other samurai.
The developers are adding giant demon versions of the OT 6 and many other supernatural enemies that will test you and your friends to the limit. Legends is more about myths and fantasy than the single-player game, which is based on real events. It shows a darker and more chaotic side of feudal Japan.
This is a brave move because Sucker Punch is still trying to meet the needs of PlayStation’s most dedicated fans. They start with a fully developed single-player story, which is what Sony’s first-party games are known for, and then add an online mode that improves the experience instead of taking it away. Today, many studios follow live-service trends more than story-driven material. Sucker Punch is taking a smarter approach.

Sony needs to pay close attention to this. Fans don’t want their favorite studios to stop doing what they do best; they want extra material that feels earned, polished, and true to the original vision. By giving Ghost of Yōtei Legends away for free, Sucker Punch has avoided the normal backlash that comes with making money from games and instead seen the expansion as a way to show appreciation for the community and build trust.
For those who can’t wait to start Ghost of Yōtei, October 2nd can’t come fast enough. And when Legends comes out in 2026, it won’t just be another add-on; it will show that PlayStation still cares about its fans.
