Alleged story details surface as players react to the direction of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
If you have been following the conversation around Naughty Dog lately, you have probably noticed how often the studio ends up in the middle of heated debates. The developer behind some of PlayStation’s most celebrated games has also built a reputation for pushing forward with characters and stories that split audiences. Even when the response is loud and negative, the studio rarely changes course. That stubborn approach is something many fans trace back to the reaction surrounding The Last of Us Part II, which became one of the most polarizing games in modern gaming.
For some observers, the situation only became more interesting when the television adaptation reached a wider audience. When the second season adapted the events of the sequel, the reaction outside the usual gaming circles was rough. Viewership reportedly dropped and many viewers were suddenly exposed to story beats that had already divided players years earlier. To critics of the narrative direction, it felt like the same argument playing out all over again, just with a bigger audience watching.
There is also another side to the conversation. Many people agree that developers should only work on projects they believe in, even though creative work can be risky. When an artist paints something that doesn’t sell, the impact is usually not very significant. The only costs might be a canvas, some supplies, and some wasted time. A major studio, however, operates on a completely different scale. When a company the size of Naughty Dog releases a controversial project, the financial stakes can reach into the hundreds of millions.

That background is part of why so many people are interested in Naughty Dog’s next big game, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
The Game Awards in 2024 was the first time people saw Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, and the response was not very positive. People on the internet quickly started to criticize the reveal trailer, saying they didn’t like the way the characters and visuals looked in the footage. The trailer got millions of views on PlayStation’s official YouTube channel, but it also got a lot of dislikes, which showed how quickly the audience had become divided.
Even though people were angry about it, the project kept going without any visible changes. Not long after the reveal, someone who said they worked for Naughty Dog and was unhappy with the project supposedly leaked story details online. The news spread quickly on social media and message boards. Many gaming outlets dismissed the claims at the time, suggesting the leaks were likely fabricated or exaggerated.
Months later, however, the official PlayStation website quietly launched a page for Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The description posted there appeared to confirm several pieces of the earlier leak, which immediately reignited discussions about whether the original claims might have been accurate after all.
According to the official description, the game takes place thousands of years in the future and puts you in the role of Jordan A. Mun, a bounty hunter who becomes stranded on a remote planet called Seria. The premise centers on survival and escape. You are trying to become the first person in more than six centuries to leave the planet’s orbit, relying on your skills and resourcefulness to survive in an unfamiliar world. Intergalactic has reportedly been in development since 2020, suggesting an unusually long production cycle even by modern standards.
If the game does not arrive until around 2027, as some reports claim, that would mean the title spent at least seven years in development. With a team of more than 250 developers believed to be involved, the cost of producing the game could easily climb into the hundreds of millions of dollars by the time it finally launches.
That enormous investment has made the alleged story leak even more controversial, because the plot described in those claims has already divided fans long before the game is finished.
The leaked narrative outlines Jordan as a former member of a criminal group known as the Five Aces. The group’s leader, Louise, vanished without warning, which caused the team to fall apart. Jordan’s shaved head, something that sparked plenty of conversation after the reveal trailer, is explained in the story as a way for her to hide her identity while she operates as a bounty hunter. She is a wanted criminal herself, and tracking bounties is simply a means to locate her former partners, particularly Louise, who she sees as a father figure.

One of the other characters mentioned in the leak is Colin, played by Kumail Nanjiani, who reportedly serves as the comic relief of the crew.
The opening section of the game allegedly begins on Seria’s moon, where Jordan chases Colin through space. Despite the space setting, the sequence reportedly contains no actual space combat, functioning instead as a cinematic introduction before both ships crash onto the planet after an EMP wave disables them.
Once the main gameplay of Intergalactic begins, the structure reportedly resembles an open-world adventure with a tone similar to Uncharted, but with heavier science-fiction elements. Most of the enemies encountered on Seria are said to be AI-controlled machines, though they come in several forms, including melee units, ranged attackers, and even vehicles.
Your crashed ship acts as the central hub of operations. As you explore the planet and track down members of your former crew, they gradually return to the ship and interact with you during different times of day. The idea reportedly mirrors the dynamic camp interactions that players saw in Red Dead Redemption 2, with conversations and character moments unfolding naturally as the story progresses.
The central mystery begins when it is revealed that Louise secretly contacted the other members of the Five Aces and asked them to travel to Seria alone. Jordan was the only one left out of the message. When three of the former crew members eventually reunite with you, the story reportedly shifts in a darker direction.
An underground species known as the Serians suddenly abducts your teammates, destroying your customizable ship in the process.
The creatures are described as humanoid but capable of extending insect-like legs that allow them to climb surfaces, and they possess strong night vision. From that point forward, the tone of the game reportedly moves toward survival horror as you travel through tunnels and underground structures trying to rescue your captured allies.
Eventually, the story reaches a dramatic confrontation. You discover that Louise has aligned himself with the Serians and intends to execute the captured crew members in front of a massive gathering of them. Jordan interrupts the scene and demands to know why he betrayed everyone.
Louise reveals the game’s central twist. According to him, the Serians were originally humans who were accidentally transported to the planet thousands of years ago during early experiments with advanced space travel technology. Over countless generations they evolved into a new civilization, but they never abandoned the dream of returning to Earth.
Their belief system centers on a prophecy tied to a figure known as the Heretic Prophet. The legend claims that one day a savior will appear and guide the Serians back to their ancestral home, where they will reclaim the planet and remove anyone standing in their way.
The planet itself is filled with ancient AI systems and war machines built over centuries in preparation for that eventual invasion. However, the Serians never managed to solve one critical problem: they cannot escape Seria’s atmosphere because the planet’s strange conditions disable any ship that tries to leave.

Louise claims he wants to help them complete their mission. As Jordan watches helplessly, he executes her captured companions one by one. He explains that he never intended for her to come to the planet at all, which is why she was excluded from the original message.
Despite his actions, he still cares about her enough to spare her life. He orders the Serians to detain her while their forces prepare for a conflict with a faction known as Galact. Jordan eventually escapes, leading to a massive final battle between the opposing sides. The climax reportedly involves you pursuing Louise across the battlefield before confronting him while he operates a massive tank.
After defeating him, his final request is that Jordan continue his mission and help the Serians see their original home again.
The game’s ending apparently depends on a major decision you make during the final moments. You can use the tank to destroy the planet’s robots, leaving the Serians vulnerable to Galact forces, or you can turn your firepower against Galact ships instead. After making the choice, Jordan finds Louise’s old spacecraft and finally escapes the planet, with the conclusion changing depending on the path taken.
Whether these leaks represent the final version of the story remains uncertain. What is clear, though, is that the discussion surrounding Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has already begun years before its expected release. With a massive budget, a long development cycle, and a narrative that could divide audiences, the game is shaping up to be one of Naughty Dog’s most closely watched projects yet.
