Reports and interviews reveal a growing rift between the developer and SIE after Sony decided to withdraw funding for the high-profile project.
Since the Tokyo Game Show, numerous conflicting reports and interviews have emerged around Hideo Kojima’s upcoming action-espionage game, Physint. Details reported by The Washington Post and Push Square suggest a growing rift between Kojima Productions and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) after Sony pulled funding for the high-profile project.
Kojima Productions Issues Warning Following Bloomberg Exposé
Kojima Productions released a statement asking fans to view the report by journalist Jason Schreier at Bloomberg, which cited budget overruns, missed deadlines, and the commercial underperformance of Death Stranding as reasons for Sony's exit, with caution. The studio said the unsubstantiated allegations concerned sensitive studio relationships, production planning, and financial performance.
Kojima Productions said in a statement that the studio is still healthy and profitable despite the turbulence. Physint’s development is progressing under a new publishing deal with Xbox, but the studio says its longstanding relationship with PlayStation still stands.
June Zoom Call and Looking for New Partnerships on Short Notice
In the run-up to the Bloomberg report, Hideo Kojima told IGN in interviews how he learned of Sony’s exit. In June, during a Zoom call with Sony executives, Kojima was told that SIE would no longer fund the development of Physint, though he was never given a specific reason for the cancellation.
Soon after informing his development team, Kojima assured his staff that he would find alternative backing. Microsoft stepped in to finance the title after early negotiations with third-party publishers proved fruitless. When asked if Physint might eventually come to PlayStation platforms, Kojima avoided the question by pointing to Xbox, saying that Microsoft’s general philosophy is to bring titles to as many platforms and players as possible.

Early Production Status, Xbox Support, Multi-Media Vision
Physint is still very early in pre-production. Kojima has finished the core concept, plot and storyboards for the game and has begun scanning cast members in 3D, including star Bill Skarsgård, but the team has yet to decide on a game engine. Kojima is experimenting with several options, including Guerrilla Games’ Decima engine.
Xbox and Kojima Productions have a big area of convergence in the wider intellectual property rights. This differs from what we have seen before, where Sony fully funds projects and doesn’t even own the IP. Xbox’s partnership has a broader multimedia vision for PlayStation that isn’t just about video games, but also films and animated projects.
Jason Schreier Reacts and Explains Cancelation Timeline
After Kojima Productions’ public statement, journalist Jason Schreier clarified his reporting, saying the studio’s response didn’t dispute any factual points in the Bloomberg article. Schreier stressed that Sony’s decision to pull funding didn't come out of nowhere, but resulted from several months of contentious negotiations between SIE and Kojima Productions over missed deadlines and core project fundamentals.
It appears that the collapse of negotiations with Sony forced Kojima to compromise on key terms to secure funding elsewhere. In the end, Microsoft gained a major action-spy IP for its gaming and entertainment catalog, while PlayStation avoided a potentially long and costly development cycle.
