Director Hideo Kojima has admitted that Death Stranding 2 has certain similarities with Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
A “Metal Gear blow-up” was the description given a few days ago to Death Stranding 2, a reference to the incredible progress made by Kojima Productions. The analogies were fairly strong. According to a source, it’s like jumping from Metal Gear Solid to Sons of Liberty, which, as followers of the series will attest, indicates a radical departure from the previous game in terms of tone, structure, and gameplay. To sum up, the original DNA is still there, but everything else has been created around it.
The second Death Stranding update is here. The source of this information has been confirmed. Despite claims that they were aware Death Stranding 2’s combat system would be drastically different from its predecessor, director Hideo Kojima concedes that the game shares some similarities with Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
The most recent edition of Edge magazine (411) makes the observation that Death Stranding 2 has certain modern touches reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid (2015). “I felt that myself when I played the game,” Kojima says, giving his endorsement. He goes on to say that the DHV Magellan, the ship you’ll be returning to in Death Stranding 2, is like a stealth game.
He compares going back to your bed on the Magellan to going back to the plant in Metal Gear, alluding to the 2015 game’s home base or mother base. Edge mentions the virtual reality tasks in Death Stranding 2 that you can participate in while exploring its bases, mentioning how similar they are to the VR missions in Metal Gear.

Intriguingly, Kojima has brought up Metal Gear Solid before while talking about the Death Stranding sequel, so it’s not the first time that some of the sound effects sound familiar. Just recently, he brought up the idea of introducing a gameplay concept in the first game and then granting players greater flexibility in the second game, like how Metal Gear Solid 1 introduced stealth and made it slightly simpler to wield weapons in Metal Gear Solid 2, as an example. We had to familiarize people with delivery since there aren’t many games like Death Stranding.
As Hideo Kojima described at the time, we wanted to give players more freedom to battle in the sequel. Hearing that playing Death Stranding 2 evokes memories of The Phantom Pain and feels remarkably similar makes sense, considering how amazing the game was. Some of the best gameplay from that series is still relevant today.
