Nintendo's Movie Strategy Could Shape Future Game Releases

Miyamoto's comments suggest Nintendo may continue pairing major film adaptations with new game launches, fueling speculation around Donkey Kong, Pikmin, Metroid, and other beloved franchises.

Nintendo's ongoing movie releases may be doing more than expanding its Hollywood presence. Recent comments from famous creator Shigeru Miyamoto have sparked new rumors that the company is looking to match future movie releases with new games to create a long-term cross-promotion strategy. Fan debates typically include Donkey Kong. Due to Nintendo's recent moves and rumors, many believe the iconic ape could get a separate animated film.

The character's absence from the next Super Mario Galaxy film suggests Nintendo may be saving Donkey Kong for a star role. It seems to fit the company's mission. Nintendo's theme park growth always started with Mario-themed attractions, followed by Donkey Kong regions. That roadmap might include Nintendo's movies, with Illumination's next big animated production being Donkey Kong.

A film may be coming by 2028, and a new large-scale 3D Donkey Kong adventure like Bananza may not be ready, but Nintendo can still capitalize on the momentum.

In the spirit of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, the company may release a new 2D side-scroller from Retro Studios or another internal team. Tropical Freeze proved that traditional Donkey Kong platformers are still popular, making another entry a good companion to a movie adaptation. Nintendo may consider other spin-offs to expand the franchise beyond platforming.

Fans are already speculating about spin-off franchises returning. Diddy Kong Racing remains a popular option, as it would allow Nintendo to promote the Donkey Kong crew and offer something new compared to Mario Kart. No sign of a project like this, although Nintendo has surprised fans before, so it's hard to rule out.

This notion stems from Miyamoto's statement that Nintendo now views its movies in a longer-term way. The company seems to want gaming and movie releases to complement each other and succeed. That philosophy shows Nintendo's current mindset. When the company announces a new film adaptation, it's reasonable to expect a game based on that film to follow a similar release schedule, whether it's a new installment, a remake, or a spin-off featuring supporting characters. 

Pikmin could also benefit from this. The argument highlighted Nintendo's franchise, leading many to believe that another Pikmin release is imminent if Nintendo continues to connect its games and movies. Other Nintendo franchises could be made into movies besides Donkey Kong and Pikmin. The Legend of Zelda live-action film, one of the company's biggest projects, could be released alongside a new Zelda game or other experience to capitalize on renewed public interest.

Metroid is another popular series.

If Nintendo's cross-promotion strategy continues, a Metroid movie may launch alongside a new Samus Aran game. Its sci-fi setting and cinematic atmosphere would make it ideal for a feature film.

Recent statements by Miyamoto suggest that Nintendo is considering more than just new games and movies. Instead, the company seems focused on building an entertainment ecosystem, with each new movie introducing millions of viewers to Nintendo characters and then driving them to unique Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 activities.

If that works, Nintendo movie announcements may surpass Hollywood news. They may also be early hints of upcoming games, with huge series and lesser-known characters getting new games timed with their film debuts. Nintendo's burgeoning entertainment portfolio may give fans more reasons to keep an eye on the movie schedule and gaming roadmap.
