A retailer listing suggests Capcom’s upcoming action title could arrive weeks earlier than expected as publishers look to avoid the looming impact of GTA 6.
Fans of Onimusha: Way of the Sword may not have to wait as long as they expected to get their hands on Capcom’s much-anticipated samurai action game. A fresh listing at a retailer has sparked speculation that the game’s release date will be announced, potentially allowing players to get their hands on it many weeks earlier than expected.
Just over a week ago, it was confirmed that the latest entry in the long-running Onimusha series was coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. The game was then set to launch simultaneously for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on September 25, 2026, Capcom claimed at the time.
But a new post from the store, PNP Games, has people wondering whether those plans have changed. The store’s product page now lists the release date as September 4, 2026, meaning the game could come out 21 days earlier than the original schedule. Fans have noticed the new date right away, and are wondering if it means there will be an announcement in the future or if it was just a mistake by the merchant. Capcom and its publishing partners have not issued any statement about the adjustment.
Grand Theft Auto VI is coming out soon; that’s the biggest game in the business, so maybe they want to get out ahead of that.
Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated open-world hit GTA 6 will be launching on November 19, 2026, and it seems several other companies are strategically timing their launches around that date.
The industry folks have already stated that September and October are busy, with so many large games coming out in those months. There aren’t many significant releases in November, barring GTA 6. This could indicate that many companies are seeking to avoid direct competition with what is claimed to be one of the biggest gaming releases ever.

It wouldn’t be a bad idea for Capcom to give Onimusha: Way of the Sword a release date in early September, so that they have time to build up sales, attract players, and cultivate a community before the market’s attention shifts to Rockstar’s next big thing. But while everyone is buzzing about the new date, fans should be wary of the report. Retail listings can provide you a glimpse of upcoming releases before they’re officially announced, but they can also contain bogus dates or just plain inaccuracies.
There is also the chance that studios are still tinkering with their book-release plans behind the scenes. Later in 2026, as the competitive environment intensifies, we may see more last-minute changes as companies fight for the best launch windows.
The gaming industry is already talking a lot about the impact of GTA 6.
Many experts believe publishers will want to avoid releasing large games too close to Rockstar’s release date. Even with brands that people know, it’s hard to catch people’s attention in the weeks leading up to a game’s release. For now, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is officially planned for release on September 25, 2026. Until Capcom provides us with more information, the September 4 date should be considered only a guess for now.
But an earlier start isn’t out of the question, given the release calendar is getting more and more busy and GTA 6 is throwing such a huge shadow. Fans will be interested to hear some official word from Capcom in the next several weeks, whether the retailer showing is a mistake or an early leak.
