Overwatch 2 charging for story mode only weeks after announcing initial changes to PVE plans.
Blizzard has already caused a stir in recent weeks with the cancellation of Overwatch 2’s story mode being announced last month. It was revealed then that Blizzard plans to still have PVE events come out on a different timeline. This led to many fans assuming the events would come out in seasonal releases, as previous co-op events have in Overwatch. The Reputation, Uprising, and Storm Rising events were released in this way through the run of the first game as free-to-play, seasonal events.
In a blog post this week, however, it was revealed that Overwatch 2 will release events as part of the Invasion Bundles, with each of these bundles costing $15. The phrasing in the original press release was very confusing, with many people initially thinking the PVE events would be free to play in a specific season, and the bundle would allow people to keep them year-round.
This was not the case. In an additional clarification, Blizzard confirmed that the player must purchase the bundle to access the event, and both during this window and the initial purchase would allow the buyer to then have continued access permanently.

It is safe to say many fans are not happy. The PVE event was what was supposed to set Overwatch 2 apart from the previous game. The Story Mode went from being a promised feature that was used to advertise the game to suddenly becoming content trapped behind a paywall.
Many are unimpressed with this change as it seems to reflect another U-turn from Blizzard, which is currently breaking many promises that were made when Overwatch 2 was announced. Overwatch 2: Invasion will launch on August 10th.
