A deep-dive State of Play reveals new combat, weapons, difficulty options and Donnie Yen’s role, but questions remain over a physical launch edition.
Phantom Blade Zero seems like one of the year's most ambitious action games, but uncertainty over its physical edition is overshadowing its October 29 release date. Developer S-GAME has disclosed a ton of new gameplay features, but there's still no clear indication that the game will be available on physical media at launch.
Uncertainty has mounted because Play-Asia listed a physical copy of Phantom Blade Zero months ahead of release. The retailer recently said his version is a physical game with a disc, not a digital download code. However, S-GAME hasn't officially confirmed whether this applies elsewhere, particularly in the US and Europe.
Pre-orders are already live, and with the game only two months away from debut, the lack of confirmation has led many fans to suspect Phantom Blade Zero could launch as a digital-only release.
The $59.99 price has also prompted comparisons to titles like Black Myth: Wukong and Alan Wake 2, which launched digitally ahead of physical versions. Regardless, the current State of Play presentation focused largely on what players can expect from Phantom Blade Zero. The dark wuxia action game will lead players through a treacherous world of assassins, martial arts masters, and people tied to protagonist Soul's adventure.
Exploration will also be a cornerstone, since side tasks could lead to other story branches and offer a deeper understanding of the events surrounding Soul. There are mysteries all across the planet that players will slowly unravel to learn the truth behind the main battle of the game. Combat appears to be one of the greatest strengths of the game.
Players can unlock over 30 weapons and 25 secondary weapons known as Phantom Edges. They can improve their weapons and mix them with a range of accessories to create builds that fit their desired playstyle. Players can also reforge upgraded weapons, returning their materials and letting them experiment with alternate loadouts without being locked into a choice.

The game will also offer several difficulty options, making it more accessible than its brutal combat might suggest. Wayfarer mode is intended for those who just want to experience the story, while Hellwalker mode adds more complex and adaptive monster behavior. A particularly tricky 66 Days mode in Phantom Blade Zero is tightly tied into the story, much as Soul's limited time to do his aims.
Another big announcement was the presence of martial arts legend Donnie Yen.
Yen is a creative consultant, performing facial and motion-capture work that helped bring the character Mentor to life and shape the game’s approach to true kung fu. Phantom Blade Zero, with its deep fighting systems, branching side content, and focus on traditional storytelling, looks set to appeal to more than just diehard action-game aficionados.
The stylish aesthetic and story focus may particularly intrigue players who might otherwise shy away from tough, combat-centric games. As of now, however, the question of a physical release is unanswered. A physical version comparable to Black Myth: Wukong could still be released later, but gamers should not expect one on October 29 unless S-GAME makes an official announcement.
Phantom Blade Zero is set to premiere on October 29 on PlayStation 5 and PC. The physical version of the game is still up in the air, but sources say early commercial feedback has been quite positive, and it could be another big hit for the booming action-game sector.
