A single quote from Sony’s earnings call sparked chaos online.
Another day, another viral tweet sends the gaming community into meltdown. This time, the internet convinced itself that PlayStation is about to pull an Xbox and go fully multiplatform. The panic started when a clip from Sony’s recent earnings hit Twitter, where execs said they were “moving away from a hardware-centric business.” Without context, that line sounded like Sony was preparing to ditch consoles altogether.
That’s not what Sony actually meant. The complete statement had nothing to do with ditching PlayStation hardware. That’s their golden goose, after all. Instead, it was about how Sony, across all their entertainment divisions, is focusing less on physical devices and more on content and community.
They pointed to examples like music streaming, their massive EMI catalog purchase, and their investment in Crunchyroll. In short, it’s about building services and not about giving up on consoles. So, stop the delusion for a second, take off your rose-tinted glasses, and step into reality.
When it comes to PlayStation, the “not hardware-centric” comment was followed by something more telling: a focus on “community-based engagement.” That means PS Plus, expanding first-party games to PC, and branching out into other media like The Last of Us on HBO and the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima movie.
All of that is about growing the PlayStation brand, not tearing it down. Nowhere in that statement did Sony even hint at releasing all of their exclusives on rival platforms. Of course, that hasn’t stopped some fans from running wild with it. Twitter is flooded with people joking about how they’ll finally get to play Spider-Man on Xbox.

Others are saying, “When Spider-Man drops on Xbox, I’m unblocking all the ponies!” But that’s pure copium. If you really want to play Spider-Man 2018, the solution isn’t waiting around for a fantasy port; just buy a goddamn PS5.
The irony is hard to miss. The same Xbox fans flexing their $800 Series X consoles are still begging for PlayStation exclusives like Spider-Man and God of War, acting as if it’s going to happen tomorrow. Meanwhile, PlayStation fans aren’t losing any sleep over imaginary ports. For most of them, this so-called console war drama is just comedy.
The idea that Sony is walking away from its console business is absolute baloney. What they’re really doing is broadening their reach. The internet may thrive on overreactions, but for now, Kratos, Spider-Man, and all the other icons aren’t going anywhere.
