Nintendo's colorful Pokémon spin-off is now the console's second-best-selling game, showing just how much players have embraced its unusual twist.
Pokémon Pokopia has officially hit a huge milestone, and it turns out players are more than happy to see Pokémon step outside its usual comfort zone. More than four months after launching, the game has sold over 5 million copies worldwide, putting it among the biggest games currently available on Nintendo's Switch 2.
According to the sources, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company Group confirmed that Pokémon Pokopia has surpassed 5 million units sold across both physical and digital versions. The game launched on March 5, meaning it reached the milestone in a little over four months.
That's a really incredible run, especially when you think that Pokopia isn't your typical Pokémon game. The game is a far more relaxing and inventive take on the series, eschewing the traditional concept of gathering Pokémon, fighting rivals and becoming a champion.
And players seem to be liking it.
Now Pokémon Pokopia has become the second best-selling game on Switch 2.
It has sold more than 5 million units. The only game ahead of it is Mario Kart World, which continues to dominate the console's sales charts. Pokopia has also surpassed Donkey Kong Bananza, another major Nintendo release. That makes the achievement even more interesting because Pokopia has had to compete with some of Nintendo's biggest names while offering something quite different.

Another potential hurdle could have turned some players away: the game is available as a Game-Key Card. Instead of containing the full game directly on the physical card, the format requires players to download the necessary data. That has caused plenty of debate among Nintendo fans, particularly among players who still prefer physical games that are fully playable straight from the cartridge. But clearly, it was not enough to stop Pokémon fans from picking up Pokopia.
The Pokémon name certainly helped, but the sales also show that people are eager to try the franchise when the concept is fresh. Fans will get to encounter the beloved Pokémon in a whole new atmosphere after years of classic Pokémon experiences in Pokopia.
So will this success lead Nintendo and The Pokémon Company to take even bigger risks with future spin-offs?
That may be one of the most interesting takeaways from Pokopia's performance. Five million copies in just a few months is not a small experiment anymore. It is a pretty loud signal that an audience exists for Pokémon games that don't necessarily follow the standard formula.
For now, Pokopia has comfortably secured its place near the top of the Switch 2 sales charts. Mario Kart World may still be sitting on the throne, but Pokémon Pokopia has certainly made itself at home in second place. And if sales continue at this pace, just how high could Pokémon Pokopia climb before its journey is over?
