Kojima Productions confirms PHYSINT development continues with XBOX after PlayStation unexpectedly ended its collaboration on the project.
PlayStation has announced it will no longer be collaborating with Kojima Productions on PHYSINT in a shocking conclusion to its association with Hideo Kojima’s next action espionage project. PlayStation Studios said in a statement that after careful consideration it has decided to pull out from the project, describing it as a tough choice.
Even after ending its involvement, PlayStation said it still admires Kojima’s vision and considered its relationship with the famed artist strong after decades of creative partnership. The company said it also expects to collaborate with Kojima and his studio on other projects.
Later, Kojima stated that PlayStation Studios had informed Kojima Productions “all of a sudden, in the middle of June,” that PHYSINT was being canceled. The game is particularly important for Kojima and the studio; therefore, the team spent the following three months trying to find a new partner to continue the development of the project.
The hunt ultimately led back to XBOX for Kojima Productions. “The two parties share a vision for the future and have decided to work together again,” Kojima said, confirming that development of PHYSINT, an action espionage game that will define a genre, will resume.

XBOX CEO Asha Sharma also lauded the deal, stating that PHYSINT and OD are projects XBOX is happy to partner with Hideo Kojima on in Japan. The news rapidly made one of the more surprising developments around the next generation of PlayStation and XBOX projects.
PHYSINT was initially introduced as a large PlayStation cooperation with Kojima Productions, and its association with the developer made it extremely noteworthy. The idea was pitched to Kojima and ex-PlayStation execs, hoping it would be a spiritual successor to the tactical espionage technique of Metal Gear Solid.

The cancelation surely disappoints PlayStation fans who were looking forward to seeing Kojima make another espionage-themed game with help from Sony. The move also represents a sharp departure from PlayStation’s history with Kojima Productions, which has provided funding for the studio and its Death Stranding projects.
After PlayStation’s decision, PHYSINT will continue to be supported by XBOX.
PHYSINT could perhaps come to more platforms, not only XBOX. However, there has been no announcement of an exclusivity deal, and the project’s platforms are still to be fully developed in the wake of the change in connection. Right now, the most important thing is that PHYSINT is not officially canceled. Instead, Kojima Productions signed another partner to continue funding and supporting the project.
PlayStation's exit could have implications for the future of the game and may involve XBOX. The development also shows how much massive platform linkages can alter. Kojima Productions was founded with the help of PlayStation, which continued to support the studio during the development of Death Stranding and its sequel.
Sony has bowed out of the initiative, with XBOX stepping in. While many details concerning the choice are still unclear, PHYSINT has officially restarted development, now under its new affiliation with XBOX. Kojima fans would probably be most relieved to hear that the project has survived and his vision may go on.
