Rockstar is possibly developing a version of Red Dead Redemption 2 that is appropriate for next-gen enhancements for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Red Dead Redemption 2, despite its huge popularity, still lacks a proper PS5 update; thus, gamers are left with a 30fps backward-compatible version. Rumor has it that Rockstar is now developing next-gen upgrades for the PS5 and Xbox Series X, maybe in conjunction with a Nintendo Switch 2 port.
Rumor has it that Rockstar Australia, famous for repairing the damaged GTA Trilogy, will also assist. Fans are optimistic but wary, particularly with GTA 6 pushed back to 2026. Especially on PlayStation, Red Dead Redemption 2 is still regarded as among the best and most visually spectacular open-world games ever created.
Despite its popularity, PS5 users have been restricted to the base PS4 version via backward compatibility, which means a 30 fps cap and a lower resolution than what Xbox Series X owners experience. Rumor has it that Rockstar was working on a comprehensive PS5 upgrade; however, those plans were allegedly shelved as the company concentrated on GTA 6.
Rockstar did publish a new iteration of the original Red Dead Redemption in 2024, but it was only a simple port with few enhancements, not much of an upgrade. Recent speculation has Rockstar possibly developing both a Nintendo Switch 2 version of Red Dead Redemption 2 and appropriate next-gen enhancements for PS5 and Xbox Series X.

Though nothing has been verified for the other platforms as yet, some sources even say the Switch version might be released by the end of 2024. This follows closely on speculation about a potential GTA 4 remaster, which—if true—might imply Rockstar is progressing with several older projects while postponing GTA 6 until 2026.
There is also conjecture that Rockstar Australia—the studio brought in to fix the damaged GTA Trilogy remake—may be working on the Red Dead Redemption 2 PS5 patch. Given the approaching PS5 Pro, fans are simply hoping Rockstar eventually releases the long-awaited update.
