Return To Monkey Island the sequel to Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge is coming in 2022 in a surprise announcement from the developers.

Ron Gilbert the creator of Monkey Island has announced on his twitter that the sequel to his 2 games Return to Monkey Island is coming this year. He makes this statement that he and the rest of the team at Terrible Toybox have been developing the project in secret for the past 2 years. Ron Gilbert made this statement on twitter:

A little something we've been working on for the past 2 years in complete secrecy.https://t.co/qwmxpYjpe5

— Ron Gilbert (@grumpygamer) April 4, 2022

This announcement is well and truly a surprise. I don’t imagine that anyone could have pictured that Ron Gilbert would be returning to the Monkey Island series, never mind making the sequel to a game that was made almost thirty years ago.

This project is being made in collaboration with Devolver Digital and Lucasfilm Games in a triumphant Return to Monkey Island. Ron Gilbert also stated that this a direct sequel to the last Monkey Island title that he worked on, which would have been Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge.

Gilbert also stated some time ago that: “All the games after Monkey Island 2 don’t exist in my Monkey Island Universe. My apologies to all the talented people who worked on them and the people who loved them but I’d want to pick up where I left off. Free of Baggage in a carnival. That doesn’t mean I won’t steal some good ideas or characters from other games. I’m not above that.”

Gilbert has undoubtedly lived up to this statement with the famous character Murray the skeleton head (who only appeared in The Curse of Monkey Island) being present in the trailer.

Alongside Ron Gilbert is the ever talented Dave Grossman to also write this next adventure as they Return to Monkey Island.
