With an Unexpected Surprise, Returnal Upgrades to PS5 Pro, delivering a big boost fans didn’t see coming.

Surprising PlayStation fans, Returnal has just received a significant PS5 Pro upgrade in an unexpected move, and quickly stirring excitement across the gaming community. Without any major announcements beforehand, developer Housemarque released a powerful patch that refreshes the acclaimed shooter with enhanced visuals and smoother performance on Sony’s upgraded console. The update didn’t take long to grab attention, and it’s easy to see why—it noticeably improves what was already an outstanding game.

Known for its deep technical analysis, Digital Foundry, examined the patch in detail and shared its findings. While the update doesn’t fully maximize the PS5 Pro’s capabilities, the results are still impressive. The most notable improvement is a huge resolution increase—pixels are now more than doubled, with a 2.56x boost in clarity compared to the standard version. This is especially remarkable since the PS5 Pro only adds about 45% more GPU power, showing just how effective dynamic resolution scaling can be.

Though there are a few minor hiccups—such as small frame time drops during certain moments like hitting enemies—these are hardly noticeable and don’t take away from the overall experience. What players will notice right away is a more stable and consistent 60 frames per second, paired with sharper, more detailed visuals that make the game’s alien environments look even more stunning.

For Returnal fans, this update is a great reason to return. Even if you’ve completed the game before, the improved performance and cleaner visuals offer a fresh experience. It’s clear Housemarque didn’t just patch the game for the sake of it—they took time to properly optimize it for the PS5 Pro, making smart use of the added power without changing the gameplay that fans already love.

Digital Foundry called the update a perfect excuse to revisit this modern classic, and that sums it up well. Returnal was already praised as one of the best shooters of its generation, and now it’s even better. Whether you’re new to the game or coming back for another run, the PS5 Pro patch makes this the best way to play. This surprise update proves that with the right care, even great games can be pushed to new heights.
