Sony invested $250 million in Epic Games for a minority stake. Epic Games has raised $1.83 billion now. Sony’s contribution account holds a 1.4% minority stake. The companies announced that the agreement builds a close relationship. They will share the same mission of advancing technology, entertainment, and games.

In May Epic showed the upcoming Unreal Engine 5 graphics on a PlayStation 5. That’s where their relationship underscored. As the company itself announced, in three previous funding rounds, Epic Games raised $1.58 billion. Tencent invested $330 million in Epic Games in 2012. Tencent holds 40% shares of Epic Games.

As Sony and Epic Games have broadened their relationship through this investment, now Sony’s portfolio has been enriched enough to give its consumers a new experience. Sony is going to launch its gaming console, PlayStation 5 later this year. It’s gonna have a tough competition with Microsoft’s Xbox Series X.

Moreover, this deal won’t force Epic Games to stop working with Microsoft. Epic Games can still collaborate with Microsoft, Nintendo, or other platforms.

Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida stated

“Throughout our investment, we will explore opportunities for further collaboration with Epic to delight and bring value to consumers and the industry at large, not only in games, but also across the rapidly evolving digital entertainment landscape”.
