Tatsuya Kando, a veteran game director who has been with Square Enix for 29 years, has formally announced his departure.
When Tatsuya Kando initially started working at Square Enix in 1997, he was an animator on Final Fantasy 7. As an animation director and supervisor for multiple Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts titles, Kando became an integral element of Square Enix’s biggest brands.
With Square Enix, Kando was able to make his directing debut with The World Ends With You and the subsequent NEO: The World Ends With You series. Now that he has announced his resignation, Tatsuya Kando will no longer be employed by Square Enix.
Veteran game director Tatsuya Kando has announced his formal departure from Square Enix after 29 years of service. Kando has worked on numerous successful titles throughout his time there, including Kingdom Hearts and The World Ends With You. The massively successful Japanese role-playing game developer is responsible for several iconic titles, including Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.
Many well-known figures in the industry have worked with Square Enix as well. Nobuo Uematsu, Yuji Horii, and Tetsuya Nomura are among the most well-known employees of the firm. An esteemed director at Square Enix has decided to depart from the firm.
As reported, Tatsuya Kando, a longtime director at Square Enix, had left the company after nearly 30 years. Kando reflected on his tenure at the company and the delight he had in contributing to some of Square Enix’s most renowned titles in his parting address.
In addition to thanking fans for their support throughout the years, the filmmaker promised to “do his best to create enjoyable content” going forward. When asked about his plans after departing Square Enix, Kando remained tight-lipped.

As soon as Tatsuya Kando announced his leaving, words of support began pouring in from his fans. Particularly for his contributions to two major series, they expressed their gratitude for his time at Square Enix.
In the responses, many fans praised Kando for his role as director of both the iOS and Switch remakes of The World Ends With You, as well as the original game. Almost every Kingdom Hearts game has Kando’s work as either the animation director or supervisor. Melody of Memory is one example of a spinoff, while Kingdom Hearts 3 is an example of a main series game.
As Square Enix prepares to launch a slew of major games, Tatsuya Kando will be departing the firm. A new Dragon Quest series remake is set to release later this year. The HD-2D remake of Dragon Quest 1 and 2 is scheduled for release in October, while development is now underway on Dragon Quest 12.
New images for Kingdom Hearts 4 have also started making the rounds, hinting at the impending release of the game. Tatsuya Kando’s tenure at Square Enix will be monumental for the Japanese video game company.
