A new protagonist, harder combat and a stronger emphasis on storytelling indicate a daring new approach for the Stellar Blade universe.
Summer Game Fest was full of surprises, but one of the greatest came from Shift Up. The company has officially revealed Stellar Blade: Blood Rain, the next chapter in its popular action franchise, and it’s certainly giving fans enough to talk about.
The unveiling trailer, at first glance, looked like a natural successor to the original Stellar Blade. Fast speed gameplay, stunning sights and futuristic ambiance all seemed familiar. But there was a big twist. But the sequel introduces a fresh new heroine named Evie instead of bringing Eve back into the limelight.
Blood Rain is a direct sequel to the original game, even if it doesn’t have the title “Stellar Blade 2." Reports say the company would rather give each installment its own personality instead of falling into a numbered naming system. It will be the same universe and will continue the plot after the previous game although it may have a different title.
This time around, Evie will be the primary character. she’s part of a special forces team probing a dangerous terrorist group operating in a city. Interestingly, the same is true for Evie and Eve, but the devs are keeping that link under wraps for now. Of course, that mystery has already led to lots of fan speculations.

The change of protagonist has been met with mixed reviews.
Evie immediately became one of the most known new characters in gaming and many gamers anticipated her to be the face of the series. Still, the indicators are most that her journey is far from over and Blood Rain seems more focused in expanding the realm than replacing what came before.
Plus, there's a boost to the gameplay. Blood Rain will lean more towards close-quarters combat. Evie’s combat will be mostly melee based, with other weapons unlocked as the game unfolds. Every weapon is meant to have a narrative purpose, not just be another item to acquire.
The backdrop to the game is changing as well. The city in the film is supposed to be more dynamic, allowing players to go into stores and walk around intricate metropolitan surroundings. But it won't be a whole open world experience. Instead, Shift Up seems to be going for a more focused structure, something that many fans loved in the previous game.
Storytelling is another topic that is garnering attention. The first Stellar Blade received accolades for its combat, visuals and soundtrack, although some gamers believed the story could’ve been improved. Sources say the sequel is leaning far more heavily on plot development, character depth and world-building.
Shift Up is also developing changes to side content and user interface.
The studio is apparently not starting over with a blank slate but rather working on improving and building on the methods that worked. Fans will have to be patient for release timing. Sources indicate the game has only been in development for roughly a year, thus a 2028 launch window is the most plausible option.
Still, the footage we've seen so far indicates that things are moving along at a healthy clip. For many players, perhaps the most exciting news is the prospect of a wider release. Platforms have not been formally announced, but Shift Up is said to want the game available to as many players as possible, so a day-one multi-platform release is a definite possibility.
Stellar Blade: Blood Rain features a new protagonist, more ambitious plot, and a promise to expand upon what made the first a success, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most anticipated action games on the horizon. Now it’s a question of whether Evie can win admirers over the way Eve did—or maybe even forge her own legacy completely.
