Stray is Getting an Animated Movie Adaptation

Stray once again proves that cats are unstoppable when they are in the main focus.

A few months ago, a simple ginger cat in a video game won several awards for being successful. It sounds rather odd, but Stray was chosen last year as the nominee for The Game Awards 2022 in six different categories and ended up winning two awards in indie categories and three nominations in other DICE and BAFTA awards. Now with fame, Annapurna Animation has decided that the Stray should get a movie adaptation.

The atmosphere and the theme of the game are rather simple. As a cat, you have to find a way back home after falling into a huge pit while traversing through canals with your cat family. The place your cat falls is filled with robots and forgotten, untouched cities. This whole cyberpunk, robot-filled utopia idea is recycled all the time, but with cats, it certainly drives itself somewhere else than what we usually come across with games that are built around futuristic and cyberpunk aesthetics.

Stray, Movie Adaptation, BlueTwelve Studios, Annapurna Studios

The studio that is responsible for the movie adaptation of Stray, Annapurna Animation, was founded by two executive animators who used to work at Disney, so we can expect to see dedicated and quality work once it is done. According to one of the executives, Robert Baird, the reason why it is unique to work on Stray is, that there won’t be any humans in the movie, just like the game itself.

The story will be told from the perspective of a cat with a free mind. There are also contributing factors, such as Stray being mostly emotional, and them finding an odd mix between how the story is fluidly told and how it blends in with the overall idea of being a cat.

As we said earlier, Stray won lots of awards and gathered quite a lot of followers after its initial release on PC and PlayStation consoles. BlueTwelve Studios also recently ported their game onto Xbox X|S as well, making it widely available to everyone. Of course, we believe this also boosted the idea of Stray becoming a fully-fledged, 3D movie. Annapurna Studio’s executives have not told us any dates for the release of the movie, but we can expect it to arrive with great graphics and overall great quality once it is finished.
