It was an immense matchup, but ultimately, Street Fighter 6 won 2023’s Best Fighting Game award.

Street Fighter 6 deservedly wins best fighting game of 2023. But, before we continue, let’s start by saying it’s that time of the year, as it’s the return of the Game Awards when we announce the best games of the year in specific categories, whether it’s on Best Art Direction, Best Narrative, or, of course, Game of the Year. But for this article, we’re focusing on one exceptional category: Best Fighting Game.

This one is special because 2023 has been an immaculate year for fighting games and games. We were truly blessed with the likes of Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1; it’s straightforward to say that fighting games right now have the potential to take over the gaming world for at least a few years.

Despite immense competition, it’s still no surprise that Street Fighter 6 won the award. The game arrived back on June 2, 2023, and by looking at our very highly positive SF6 review, you’ll understand much more as to why Street Fighter 6 deserved the award. It was a massive upgrade to the predecessor with a sizeable roster, with more to come. A much-improved gameplay, including the level-defining drive mechanics, outstanding character and stage designs and visuals, lots of content, and much more.

It wouldn’t have been a surprise had it also become a Game of the Year candidate. Unfortunately, it didn’t become one, but it is a great game nonetheless. You can also say the same for Mortal Kombat 1, as it is great too. But wildly, these two aren’t the only nominated games of the genre, and there could only be one winner. But let’s revisit the Best Fighting Games of 2023 nominees.

  • Street Fighter 6
  • Mortal Kombat 1
  • Pocket Bravery
  • God of Rock
  • Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2

This is an incredible list, and all games are great, but there realistically were two clear favourites (Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1) to win it, and the former came out on top. As if things couldn’t get better as we wait for another top fighting game, Tekken 8, to arrive next month, January 26, 2024, to be exact. Congratulations to Street Fighter 6 for winning the prestigious award; Capcom should be very proud, and may they continue bringing greatness to the franchise.
