Ubisoft's remake posts impressive launch sales, outperforms Shadows on Steam, while players debate DLC practices and await upcoming fixes.
Ubisoft has kicked off what looks like one of its biggest launches in recent memory with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, claiming the remake had sold 2 million copies on launch day. The game’s downloadable content and microtransactions are still a hot topic within the community, but the commercial success says Edward Kenway's return has been a big hit with players.
Fans have picked up on the publisher's language in the announcement. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows was often marketed with player numbers, but Ubisoft explicitly said that Black Flag Resync had sold 2 million copies on day one. "Copies sold" means actual sales, not overall player interaction through subscriptions or other such services, which is a key distinction.
To many fans, the announcement suggests that the remake has done better than expected commercially.
Black Flag Resynced is a remake of the popular 2013 pirate adventure, not a fresh entry in the open-world genre. Its development budget was likely much less ambitious than that of a flagship title such as Assassin’s Creed Shadows, but it nevertheless generated strong launch momentum. Steam stats also show a successful launch for the game.
Black Flag Resynced allegedly had roughly 99,000 concurrent players, easily topping Assassin's Creed Shadows' high of about 65,000. That Assassin's Creed IV can hold its own against the newest mainline entry, while being a remake of a title more than a decade old, is proof of its staying power. Those impressive launch figures are a testament to how much Black Flag is still adored in the Assassin's Creed franchise.
Edward Kenway's pirate adventure has long been considered one of the best entries in the series by many gamers, and that reputation seems to have translated into good launch sales. With the holiday discounts coming, the game might keep growing through the rest of the year. Some gamers remain suspicious of paying full price for a remake, but future deals during big discounts like Black Friday could reach a much wider audience.

Ubisoft also praised gamers for providing screenshots, gaming footage, and feedback after launch, as well as hitting the sales milestone. The publisher said community feedback has helped identify some technical issues that the development team is actively addressing. Among the more significant ongoing changes are localization and voice-over issues in specific locations, as well as a PC bug that limits cinematic sequences to 30 frames per second. Ubisoft says it is already working on several patches to improve the overall experience.
To commemorate the launch’s success, Ubisoft is also giving away free in-game stuff. All Black Flag Resynced purchasers will receive the Crimson Storm Sails cosmetic item for the Jackdaw, and 1,500 Animus Keys to use in the in-game exchange.
The rewards can be redeemed through Ubisoft Connect for a limited time. The publisher has also published a long list of known concerns currently under investigation. There are already several gameplay flaws for missions, combat, stealth mechanics, and progression that have been acknowledged. Some of the player-reported problems include getting stranded during certain quests, occasional fast-travel issues, ship upgrades causing unexpected issues when docked, and infrequent instances of becoming stuck after a desync.
Ubisoft has had the same focus on enhancing combat. The team is working on fixes for rope dart targeting, stealth detection issues, AI behavior, and mission-specific interactions that can confuse players in certain situations. Some of the gameplay principles aren’t explained well enough, Ubisoft also pointed out. Players have noted a lack of tutorial guidance on the money-throwing mechanic, which can distract guards and cause disorder among citizens.
Future updates will aim to improve player onboarding and address other bug reports as they come in. Black Flag Resynced has had a successful commercial debut, but the game’s policy of releasing extra content has drawn considerable criticism. Outside the basic game, users can buy over $84 worth of cosmetic DLC, Deluxe Edition features, and access an in-game microtransaction store.
The extra material is mainly cosmetic character packs, naval customization items, and optional purchases, not gameplay additions. Critics say Ubisoft's continued reliance on extensive post-launch monetization diminishes some of the goodwill established by the otherwise successful release of the remake." Supporters say the additional purchases are fully voluntary and do not restrict access to the primary campaign.

The bigger plan reflects Ubisoft's tried-and-true business model.
Publishers generally don’t expect all players to purchase premium cosmetic content; instead, they assume a very small percentage of highly engaged spenders will generate incremental long-term revenue after launch. While the increasing amount of optional paid content has been a source of frustration for many players, the introduction of Black Flag Resync shows that, for the most part, excitement for the game itself has outstripped concerns about its commercialization.
Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Mirage has shipped 2 million copies in its first day, with more Steam concurrency than Assassin's Creed Shadows and many fixes already in the works. It looks like the publisher has delivered one of its strongest Assassin's Creed launches in recent years. Whether that success will lead to future remakes, more Black Flag content, or affect the direction of future installments remains to be seen. Still, the early indicators suggest that one of the franchise's most beloved adventures is enjoying a very successful revival.
