Steam Frame’s $1,300 Price and One-Year Warranty Raise Concerns About Long-Term Hardware Reliability and Replacement Costs.
The 1TB kit for Valve's Steam Frame costs between $1,060 and $1,300. The power supply costs an extra $30, and an ergonomic companion kit costs an extra $60. Beyond the price, there are still concerns about the headset's warranty, repairability, availability of replacement parts, and the long-term user experience with Valve hardware.
Steam Frame is expected to have the same one-year warranty as the Valve Index unless Valve changes the policy before release. For a headset starting at $1,060, that raises questions about long-term ownership and what happens when hardware develops problems after the first year.
Steam Frame Has a One-Year Warranty
We eventually used a custom faceplate and a small aperture-grill-style fan to blow air away from the headset. The goal was not to blow cold air into the headset, which could affect the panels and dry out the eyes, but to move hot air away from it. The setup introduced some noise, but the Index microphone handled it well with a small noise gate.
The Index was still an upgrade from the original Oculus Rift, also known as the CV1. Its specifications were low enough that it could use HDMI to run its two displays. However, the CV1 had some of the best VR controllers available. The outside-in tracking and coverage provided a large field of view with few blind spots.
Sometimes, when the controller was released, the system did not immediately recognize that the hand had let go. The controller could float around the back of the hand with no fingers touching it, yet tracking could continue for several seconds. That made actions such as grabbing and throwing objects, which are common in VR, difficult with the controllers.

Valve’s Warranty Covers the Original Purchase
The controller problems were reported to Valve, and Valve determined that the thumbstick sensor failure in the left controller was an actual hardware fault. The sensor was not completely dead. Moving the stick all the way up or down could still register thumb input. However, Valve determined it was a factory defect.
The controller went through the RMA process again, but Valve initially declined because the Index was outside its warranty period. More than a year had passed since the controller was last usable. I explained the situation to Valve, including the period when SteamVR was unavailable. Valve eventually understood the circumstances and proceeded with the RMA.
However, the warranty terms remained an issue. For a $1,000 piece of hardware, the original unit receives a one-year warranty from the purchase date. Replacement parts fall under the original purchase warranty. Steam Frame is expected to take a different approach. Its components are designed to be serviceable. However, questions remain about whether the most likely failure points will be serviceable and whether replacement components will remain available.
Steam Frame Repairability Still Raises Questions
When the controller issue was reported to Valve again, Valve attempted to help by providing a source for replacement parts so the controller could potentially be repaired independently. The recommended supplier did not carry the required part. The supplier also stated that it had never carried that Valve part and did not know why Valve had directed the customer there.
Replacement availability was another problem with the Index. Even if owners were willing to purchase additional tracking stations or controllers, those products were frequently unavailable. That could leave owners searching for used hardware on third-party marketplaces, where prices may be higher, and warranty coverage may be unavailable.
Replacement tracking stations were not consistently available throughout the Index's lifespan. That history creates concerns about the Steam Frame. The Index experience raises questions about Valve's hardware durability, warranty structure, customer service, repairability, and the availability of replacement parts.
Steam Frame also uses inside-out tracking rather than external tracking stations. If the tracking system in the headset fails, other components could continue to work. The internal storage, lenses, and other hardware could remain functional even if the tracking system is unusable. In that situation, the entire headset could potentially require replacement.

Valve may have learned from the Index. Steam Frame controllers and headset could be more durable, the hardware could be more user-repairable, and replacement parts could remain available. The inside-out tracking system could also prove more reliable than the external tracking system used by the Index.
All of those possibilities remain open. The main concern is the one-year warranty. A $1,300 headset with a one-year, non-renewable warranty places considerable importance on hardware reliability and the availability of replacement parts after the first year. Steam Frame could ultimately prove more reliable than the Index.
