Xbox consoles remain firmly on store shelves while Microsoft reaffirms its commitment to hardware.
Another weekend, another wave of Xbox drama. If you’ve been scrolling through YouTube, Reddit, or X lately, you’ve probably stumbled across claims that Walmart and Target are preparing to stop selling Xbox products altogether. It sounded like a big deal, especially with all the recent news of Microsoft possibly stepping away from the console business.
But in came Microsoft, stepping in and saying, “Actually, that’s not true.” The confusion began after reports emerged that Costco had stopped stocking Xbox Series X and Series S consoles. That move was the catalyst for all this confusion. When posts started circulating suggesting Walmart and Target were next, the story caught fire across TikTok, Twitter, YouTube, and all.
Some people decided to investigate by contacting local stores directly. A few quick calls later, it turned out that Xbox consoles were still sitting comfortably on shelves. So much for that rumor.
Microsoft released an official statement confirming that both Target and Walmart remain committed retail partners. That includes everything from consoles and accessories to exclusive games. Simply put, there’s no secret phase-out and no behind-the-scenes plan to ditch Xbox. You can still walk into your nearest Target or Walmart today and buy an Xbox without any issue.

But, then again, I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking that Target or Walmart is “targeting” Xbox. Xbox has had a rough stretch lately. Between Game Pass price hikes, layoffs, and some notable departures from its gaming division, it’s safe to say the brand has seen better days. So, when a rumor like this pops up, it sticks easily because it fits a narrative people are already worried about: that Microsoft is “pulling out” of the console business.
Microsoft is pivoting toward software and publishing titles across multiple platforms rather than focusing solely on Xbox consoles, so the word on the street goes. So, the idea that retailers were cutting ties seemed believable at first glance. But according to Microsoft’s latest statement, that’s not what’s happening.
Right now, the only confirmed exception is Costco, which no longer carries Xbox systems.
Microsoft made it clear that this is an isolated case. Xbox consoles are still available at major retailers, and no indication will change anytime soon.
Xbox isn’t vanishing from store shelves, and Microsoft’s not ditching its consoles. Still, you may ask how long the company will keep fighting in the hardware space and when the focus might truly shift elsewhere.
