As I was browsing through the PlayStation Store, I was thinking to myself that I wanted to try out a different game. Then Rogue Company was in my sights. Honestly, I hadn’t heard very much about the game, but I was thinking that it might be worth a shot to have some time with it. The game is free to play, so you can have a go and judge for yourself if the game is good or not.
Without worrying about having wasted money on a game, you would end up not liking it in the end. The only money you will be using is for the Rogue Company store to buy items such as skins for characters, weapons, and so on. The initial file size isn’t too big, so depending on your internet speed, it shouldn’t take too long to complete the installation.
Rogue Company is a free-to-play, third-person shooter that was released on 1st October 2020 on platforms ranging from PC to Xbox One. It was also released on the next-gen consoles, Xbox Series X and S, on November 25, 2020. The game is strictly multiplayer. Rogue Company was developed by First Watch Games and published by Hi-Rez Studios.
This game was especially interesting to me, mainly because it was in the third-person perspective, which I prefer over the first-person mode. I can honestly say I had some fun with this game, and this would intrigue even the most casual gamers. If you are a gamer who plays first-person shooters regularly, then you might struggle at first and would need a little time to adjust to this game.
Strangely, the game’s mechanics give me somewhat a feeling like I am playing Fortnite, but without building forts, the Battle Royale genre, and so on. The game consists of a few selections of game modes for you to choose from. My favorite mode is demolition. In this mode, you are set up in four vs four matches where teams are taking turns in planting bombs in the enemy’s territories. The game mode has rules very similar to the mode in Call of Duty.
However, the number of game modes available is unsatisfactory. The game would benefit a lot more with the inclusion of more game modes. The number of weapons is also very weak. However, there are a few weapons, such as the KA30, which gamers would wish to use throughout their Rogue Company experience, or at the very least, most of the time. Plus, you can upgrade the weapons, so this might not be a major problem for some gamers.
The gameplay is fairly limited. That doesn’t mean to say there are a few available movements, such as crouching behind cover that isn’t useful, particularly in gunfights. However, this weakness can prevent players from behaving creatively in eliminating the enemies. Funnily, the shooting mechanics balance out this flaw as it feels smooth and great to execute this action. It’s very helpful that you have the boost option, which enables players to get to their desired destination in a much quicker time. It’s also very cool how you are typically deployed from a plane.
As I was playing Rogue Company on the PlayStation 5, although the game is not made for this platform, I was still able to play the game on backward compatibility. When you first start the game, you immediately notice a considerable difference. The visuals are pretty attractive. Especially when you are playing on a 4K monitor. The sharp and crispy effects would entice you. The weapons, buildings, suits, objects, and so on display some cartoonish elements, but with small hints of realism that look better in lighted areas.
The audio was also pretty cool, you’d have each rogue have their persona and either catchy or amusingly cheesy one-liners that would make any gamer find a connection with. The game would be more engaging if there were many more catchphrases, rather than just repeating one or a couple of phrases occasionally. I love how the developer eventually added the item shop. Nothing sweeter than spending reputation points after so much grinding on the game. Furthermore, it’s so much more rewarding when you purchase awesome skins, emotes, and so on. One of my favorite features in the game.
Rogue Company possesses some elements that would encourage gamers to continue playing for a very lengthy period. This game could also be a bit on the side if you are getting a little bored playing one of your favorite games excessively and decide to take a break from it. Having said all of that, Rogue Company lacks so much originality. It’s almost as if they had taken so many different features from multiple popular games and merged them.
It’s very difficult identifying features you would think First Watch Games came up with themselves. Rogue Company still has a long way to go, but for now, this game does not pose much of a threat to other juggernaut free-to-play games such as Apex Legends and Fortnite. Maybe with more improvements and seasons to come, they might become genuine competitors.
