Review Overview

A Plague Tale: Innocence delivers so many wonderful attributes to make it a near-perfect game.

As you may or may not recall, A Plague Tale: Innocence was first released just a couple of years ago when it was only available on the previous-gen consoles. As well as on Microsoft Windows. But now, this fantastic survival horror is available on the current-gen consoles. As well as on Switch.

For all you current-gen owners seeking a new horror game, A Plague Tale: Innocence is a thrilling choice. It offers a rollercoaster of emotions-excitement, anxiety, suspense, drama, and sorrow. And here’s the kicker: It’s completely free for PlayStation Plus subscribers. What a treat!

You won’t have to spend a single penny to play this game. This is a huge surprise, seeing as how phenomenal this game is. Not to mention the noticeable improvements in the game, such as the visuals.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a treasure trove of thrilling and historic adventure that you’ll wish never ends. As you delve into the story of the main characters, Amicia and her younger brother, Hugo, you’ll uncover a myriad of secrets that will leave you spellbound. The game’s stealth elements only add to the excitement, making it a unique blend of horror and adventure.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is an action-adventure stealth game developed by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive. It was initially released on 14th May 2019, but was available on previous-gen consoles, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows. It was then released on 6th July 2021 on current-gen consoles, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

The story is unbelievably great. The plot, the characters, the secrets uncovered, the missions, and pretty much everything else you could ask for in a story were done to perfection. The story delivers so much drama that you would connect with the characters. And if a game such as this can achieve that, you just know they have done something right.

This shows sadness for the young boy Hugo, who is troubled but also possesses a great gift. But let’s not forget that while on this great, huge adventure, you will encounter horrific flesh-eating rats who will not hesitate to feast on anyone they lay their eyes on.

But you will, later on, realize that their main weakness is light. This makes your journey a lot more challenging, as you need to get within a light source to prevent it from becoming the rats’ dinner.

However, the rats don’t have to be disadvantageous to you all the time. On many occasions, they can be very beneficial for you. For example, rats also eat enemies, and they can do a much better job at eliminating them or even scaring them away than you can. The gameplay is very limited.

However, surprisingly, that doesn’t take much away from how enjoyable the game is overall. But then again, you could say the restricted gameplay would encourage you to think more outside the box to achieve your objectives. Not to mention, the game is heavily based on stealth, so you probably wouldn’t necessarily need fluid mechanics.

The player interactions were also very good. The cut scenes were fun to watch, as they got you wanting to know what happens next. Another thing that deserves mentioning is the chasing. You’d have to escape from either the enemies or the horde of rats, and those resulted in a heart-racing feeling, which would leave you wanting more of that action. You’d also need to put your critical thinking to the test as you are being tasked with completing challenging puzzles.

When you play on 4K resolution, the visuals are noticeably improved, with a much sharper look. Surprisingly, I feel the graphics could have improved in some areas, such as the faces of the characters, especially when there are wet surfaces. However, with the overall quality of the game, this isn’t too much of a bother, and it shouldn’t be that bothersome to you, either.

The audio is another bright spark to the game. The developer used the most appropriate soundtracks for the game. Depending on certain situations. The music would add more adrenaline to the player in times such as running away from enemies. The voice actors deserve acclaim for their performances, especially the actor for young Hugo.

The characters in A Plague Tale: Innocence are a rollercoaster of emotions that will tug at your heartstrings. When they’re sad, you’ll feel their sorrow, and when they’re happy, you’ll share their joy. Each character, with their unique personality, will forge a different connection with you, making the game a truly emotional journey.

Ultimately, this game delivers so many wonderful attributes to make it a near-perfect game. Amazingly, it is free, even though it was originally released a couple of years ago. This isn’t like your ordinary game.

A Plague Tale: Innocence can make any player go through a range of emotions as they play. I strongly recommend you go with this game. Take some time off from whatever game you play regularly, and try to put some of your precious time into completing this game. I guarantee there will be no regrets if you do so.
