Review Overview

If you are a puzzle fanatic and you would like to try something different, then look no further. Particularly, if you are a fan of ghosts and souls. Even if you want to try something a little different, because you have been playing too many of the most popular games and you feel you would like to take some time off them, then you might want to try out a game like Evergate. Plus, this is a budget game, so you shouldn’t feel much or any regrets about buying this.

This game has a particularly interesting story for you to complete, and the next-gen graphics are a bonus, so those are more reasons why you might be persuaded to at least trying out this game, as well as if you have a child or a young sibling, as this game is more fitting to a younger demographic with cartoonish and colorful visuals, very short gameplay, youthful styled music and so on. So, they’d most likely enjoy this game much more than you would. Another cool thing is that the view is displayed in 2D, so it would give you nostalgic vibes, which is what is sometimes needed in modern gaming.

Evergate is a 2D puzzle platformer that was developed by Stone Lantern Games LLC and was published by Stone Lantern Games LLC and PQube. The game is available on platforms ranging from Nintendo Switch to Xbox Series X and S. The story is set in the vision of the afterlife, and your task is to embark on 85 demanding levels and uncover the power of the Soul flame to bring back to life on Earth. No doubt that during this journey you will have to use your brain a lot more on certain levels than others, and that’s a good thing, as we need our minds tested.

Evergate

Although the game isn’t very similar, it does remind me a lot of the classic Heart of Darkness game, with the 2D vibes, having to go through tough obstacles, and a horrifying theme. Ironically, the story is pretty cliché, but interesting at the same time, because of what happened to the character to end up being in a realm, it makes you motivated to complete the main objective to get back to Earth. The duration of the game is decent. It is not too short, to a point where you would feel like you’re being ripped off, but not too long either, as you might end up getting bored with this game.

The gameplay isn’t as fluid as desirable, and the game is lacking so much originality and creativity. However, there are just about enough elements to make it a fun experience for any player, in particular a younger demographic. Especially, when you are shooting a white beam to perform cool acts such as slowing downtime, which is a feature that benefits a player during the campaign, but also compensates a little for what this game is lacking to be phenomenal.

Unfortunately, the visuals and the harmonizing music are the highlights of the game as a whole. I could not help but fall in love with the designs of the levels, the seemingly unlimited range of colors, and the vibrant look. It looks even more beautiful when you are playing on 4K resolution, and everything looks far sharper. Some games make you want to stop what you are doing and glance over the very colorful background, and Evergate is one of them. It is obvious that they had taken more time with the graphics than the gameplay, and that should not be the case.

Evergate

The choice of music is great. Perfectly fits the game. The music is peaceful and would prompt you to stop what you are doing and enjoy it. There are virtually no negatives you can find with the music, as well as the visuals. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the gameplay. Although each level feels like a puzzle as it should, the gameplay needed a lot more emphasis for players to enjoy it a lot more. On the other side, younger people would thoroughly enjoy this game a lot more as they wouldn’t be as picky as an adult.

Ultimately, Evergate would be much more suited for a younger audience who loves to solve puzzles. The story is intriguing, as you would like to guide the protagonist back to earth. The choice of music is fantastic, and I don’t think Stone Lantern Games could do a better job with the gorgeous visuals. But the gameplay is the let-down, and it definitely would have collected a lot more cool points if they had put much more effort into it. That being said, this might not necessarily be a huge problem for much younger people, and if this game is worthy of buying, it is, but only if you intend on getting it for a younger individual.
