Fun

The Fall Guy is a nice return to lighthearted but still decently-written action flicks.

The Fall Guy (2024) is based on an 80s television show under the same name. It’s different since it is a film based on an entire running television show. The television show ran for a couple of years in the early 80s.

It would’ve been cool to see a remake of the television show with the same actors as in the film, but it’s hard to see such big names as Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt being on a TV show. Without them, The Fall Guy (2024) would not have been as good. But a lot of these kinds of action movies have big actors and actresses in them to help sell tickets. The Fall Guy (2024) also isn’t doing the best at the box office, so it’s hard to see them making a sequel or turning this into a series of films.

The Fall Guy’s (2024) casting is pretty interesting when you think about it. Last year, in the summer of 2023, we had two massive blockbuster films, Barbie and Oppenheimer. Two of the stars from each respective film are in Fall Guy. You have Ryan Gosling, who played Ken in the Barbie movie. And you have Emily Blunt, who played Kitty in Oppenheimer. Unfortunately, having those two in the film isn’t making it reach Barbie or Oppenheimer’s box office numbers.

The Fall Guy (2024) would do well at the box office, given its star power and its theme. You have the older generation who grew up on the television show, wanting to see the remake, and fans of Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, which is a lot of people, going to see the movie.

The Fall Guy (2024) is PG-13. But it doesn’t cut down on a ton of intense action. Since it is PG-13, you’re not going to get that violent-in-your-face, John Wick-style action, but you’re still going to get some cool stunt work. A lot of combat could result in an R rating. You have a lot of car scenes, explosions, and more visual feats. The film does a great job of showcasing the talent of stunt people. The Fall Guy (2024) does a good job of teaching average moviegoers what a stunt man or woman does.

We see our main character, Colt, who is played by Ryan Gosling, engaged in many stunts. Some are on the film set that he is filming on, and some are actually in real life when he is dodging gangsters and criminals. When he is on-site doing stunts, we get to see the whole process of a stuntman’s day-to-day life. We see all the precautions that are taken and all the things that happen off-camera before and after the stunt is done.

Colt does most of his stunts on a set that is either run by or has Jody on it, who is played by Emily Blunt. We see them have an off-and-on relationship throughout The Fall Guy (2024). We get to the point where Jody has worked her way up from camera operator to director and is making her movie. After some time of the two being apart, Colt is hired on her movie set to be a stuntman, and Sparks fly once again.

But the lead actor in the movie they are making ends up disappearing, and they have Colt go and find them due to their history together. It turns out he is involved with some pretty shady business and has run into some criminals. It’s a pretty simple plot to follow, but it still has enough going on in it to make it entertaining.

The Fall Guy (2024) is an all-out action movie. It is also a comedy-heavy film. The comedy Is pretty good in the film. I find that when movies mix action or horror with comedy, it sometimes isn’t for the best. But this film does a pretty good job of mixing action and comedy. Reminds me of how Abigail did the same with Horror and Comedy. A lot of that is due, in part, to Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt having great chemistry and both being very funny people. In this film, I could tell that some of it was improvisation.

This is good because it shows that the actors and actresses were having fun on set and that fun translates to the viewer as well. You could tell some of the scenes were cut right before they all started cracking up, which was fun. It reminds me of some of those comedies I went to and saw in theaters when I was younger.

A lot of films nowadays are super serious, which is fine because we need that kind of movie, but we also need movies like this that are pretty good at having a decent story while also giving the viewer a fun time. If you like action, you’ll like this movie; if you like Emily Blunt or Ryan Gosling, you’ll like this movie as well. Now don’t go expecting this movie to be life-changing or something that you’re going to remember for a long time. You’ll remember the film for at least a couple of days, but it’s not going to be a long-lasting, impactful movie. I think a lot of people aren’t expecting that, though.

A good point for The Fall Guy (2024) as well is that it has pretty good music, at least for my tastes. There’s a lot of good rock in the film, and there’s also some pretty contemporary music as well. It’s got some pretty wide-ranging genres of music in it, ranging from Taylor Swift to Kiss. The way they incorporate the music is great as well. I always like it when movies, shows, or video games use a well-known song and can translate it and give it new meaning.

Think of how “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey was used in The Sopranos or The Last of Us Part 2 used Pearl Jam’s “Future Days.”. They do that in this film with the Kiss song “I Was Made for Loving You,” using different iterations of this song and bringing it into crucial moments.

The Fall Guy (2024) does run over two hours, which does seem a little too much for this kind of movie. It was fun all the way through, and it has that very ADHD-type editing where everything is happening very quickly, and then your face. So it does not ever drag anywhere, but it definitely could’ve cut out at least 20 minutes to keep it under two hours. I think a lot of people would have liked the short and sweet nature of an action comedy. Maybe that’s why it didn’t make as much money because it was over two hours. I’m sure that’s one of the many factors.

Regardless of its flaws, this is a fun movie to see in theaters. You’ll get some good laughs from seeing it, and you’ll see some great action in it. I do wish it made a little bit more money because I like what they did with the source material and would’ve liked to see more as far as sequels go. Hollywood will very rarely give a movie a sequel if it doesn’t do great at the box office. I recommend trying to see The Fall Guy (2024) in theaters soon because it’s fun with a group of people.

Good Stuff A very fun movie to watch, all the action scenes are very well done. Movie is saved by it's leads as they shine bright in this movie. Great music and sound design.
Bad Stuff Not a film with a lot of weight, but that is to be expected. I wanted it to be shorter and leave the option for a sequel.
Summary
The Fall Guy (2024) is a great and fun action flick. Be sure to see it with good sound as it's made for the big screen. You might not remember it forever but you will enjoy yourself.
