The Housemaid (2025) made a lot of buzz; it’s a fun movie worth watching if you’re interested, but it has plenty to nitpick.
The Housemaid (2025) is Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried’s latest film. It’s based on a book, and a sequel has already been announced. The book series is a trilogy, so I’m sure they’ll go ahead and adapt every book into a trilogy of films as well. It’s a very entertaining film that gives you enough of what you want to see, but it is definitely too long.
I understand some movies end up longer when they’re adapting a book because there’s so much material. And The Housemaid (2025) could easily have been a miniseries and expanded upon, but I feel like, as a film, you could’ve cut out 15 or 20 minutes.
There is definitely a lot that could be cut from the beginning of The Housemaid (2025). Once certain characters are revealed to be good or bad, it feels like every movie wants to be long nowadays due to streaming, which means the more time is spent on the streaming service, the better, so the movie needs to be as long as it can be.
Some movies can be expanded upon and work, but this one isn’t doing anything brand new or incredibly special, so it definitely doesn’t need to be super long. About 15 or 20 minutes could’ve been cut; even 10 would’ve made it a little better. I think you could’ve easily taken even more and made it a snappier film, pace-wise.
The Housemaid (2025) sits at 2 hours and 15 minutes.

Besides the runtime, The Housemaid (2025) has a couple of cringe-worthy moments in my opinion. Some of the music used makes it feel like I’m watching a borderline wine mom smut film. The music is kind of corny in the sexual scenes, and it kind of feels like something out of a silly movie for teenage girls. It seems that a lot of people agree with some of that.
Not saying that the music is bad in it—I think that the original score made for the film was good, but some of the soundtrack choices were questionable. I think The Housemaid (2025) has some decent performances, but unfortunately, Sydney Sweeney doesn’t seem to be giving much.
I think she can be a good actress, as she demonstrated in Euphoria, with her range of emotions. But for some reason in this movie, she is completely toned down and not really trying, it feels like. I understand her character is more subdued, but there are plenty of moments where it feels like she should’ve been a little bit more into it, and some of the scenes.
But honestly, some of that kind of plays into what makes The Housemaid (2025) funny to watch because there are these kinds of out-of-nowhere scenes that come off as funny, but not really in a good way, in a trashy TV sort of way.
Kind of like a reality TV show type thing.

Of course, she was in this movie for her name recognition and for a couple of other reasons you’ll see when you watch it. She’s definitely known for a couple of things, and those couple of things were in The Housemaid (2025).
Amanda Seyfried did a great job in The Housemaid (2025), though.
I think she really did a good job of showing all the different emotions her character was going through. Without having to go into spoilers, she was dealing with someone crazy, and that made her crazy, so she was basically all over the place.
The Housemaid (2025) is a whodunit of sorts, and it definitely takes a lot from the Gone Girl film. They even end up having a montage that feels very similar to the Gone Girl movie’s montage in the middle section of the movie. Where you think one character is the bad person, and then you find out they aren’t as bad as you think.
Gone Girl is a little different in that way, but it’s still similar in how they executed it. I kind of wish I hadn’t read about that comparison before watching the movie, because it made me feel like I already knew everything that was going to happen at that point.

That kind of leads me to another point of what I think isn’t good about The Housemaid (2025), at least for me. I saw everything that was coming. I wasn’t surprised at any of the twists or turns because of the stories we’ve seen over and over again of who’s good and who’s bad in these whodunit-type movies.
You see someone who seems suspicious, and someone who is not suspicious, and who is trying just to throw the audience off. I did see a lot of the twists and turns coming from a mile away, and some of that is because the movie isn’t very subtle.
When someone shows up in the frame, and they’re not supposed to be there, you have this loud thud sound effect to kind of jump scare you when you’re watching it. That’s where the trashy TV component comes in for me, where it’s so over the top. I kind of wish they played it up more, because I found that aspect funnier when they were more self-aware.
I know The Housemaid (2025) isn’t trying to be anything special or insanely original, but at the same time, if they had played into the campier side, I think it would’ve been more fun. They kind of did and kind of didn’t, and it’s a fine line that, in my opinion, definitely leaves much to be desired.

The Housemaid (2025) is very entertaining, though, despite its long runtime, it would’ve been even more entertaining if it were a little shorter. I think if the plot sounds interesting to you, you should check it out.
It’s definitely interesting to watch with people to see their reactions to some of these crazy, over-the-top scenes. The sequel will be very interesting to see, as The Housemaid (2025) made a lot of money at the box office for what it is.
